It just came out yesterday. Very Happy

I played the demo, and liked it. And I love the entire Civ series. But alas, haven't been able to get it legally online (as a download). Basically, purchasing from Steam failed, as all the VISA & Paypal info I have is Canada-based and it seems to know I'm buying it from Korea. Then I tried buying it from Direct 2 Drive, and after trying to purchase it online, it said that the country I am in (Korea) is a restricted territory. Geeze, what's up with this? If anyone knows a way to legally purchase and download the game, let me know. A friend of mine emailed Steam, as he had the same problem, but of course no reply...

So today I'm off to Yongsan to go buy the game I've been waiting forever to play, as I can't sit around and wait for something to happen with these stupid download sites. I just hope it's been released in Korea... *crossing the fingers*

Try this site?

They don't have annoying country restrictions

Well, Yongsan doesn't have it. Only a couple of places there actually sell PC games... and one guy said they'd get Civ 5 in a week. Ahh well...

Thanks, but I tried it and got this message:

Big red letters: "Payment Refused" and then...

Please verify your payment details and try again. Or you can contact support if you keep having this problem.

Alright, tried paying through paypal and this happened:

Everything seemed fine, as Civ 5 started to download with their downloader. So, when it finished (in about 5 minutes, which I thought was odd) I clicked install. Instead of installing the actual game, it installed Steam. So, I tried everything, looked under "My Games" and tried to manually download the game, but nothing. I also got an email from them saying they are currently reviewing my purchase for fraud... so, I contacted them through customer support and told them I'm no fraud (just a Canadian living in South Korea) and about my issues downloading the actual game.

So, I wait... but at least it's something! I think it'll all work out...

You could always just download it from one of the torrent site for free.. Smile

But that would be illegal.

best to wait and buy it.

I haven't tried it but I will in a few weeks if NBA2K11 gets a Steam release.

that's a bit strange. i was able to purchase and dl civ5 with no problems from steam. there are some games i haven't been able to get in the past due to regional restrictions (ie: gta 4) but aside from that, I never had any problems making any purchases from steam and dling it in korea.

on a side note, i'm actually a bit disappointed with civ5 so far. I've played all the civ's and alpha centauri and this game just doesn't feel like a civ game. I think every civ game up until 4 seemed like a good evolution of the base game, but civ5 feels like a bit of a regression in some ways. maybe it'll get better later though. i'm still in my first game.

Haha, thanks for the advice and all.. but here's what happened. So, I was all excited to play civ 5... so I decided as I wait for the "legal" version to clear, why not download the "not-so-legal" version? So, I installed and have been having a great time playing civ 5... illegally... Embarassed

So now I just got an email from Games Planet UK with the two files I need to download and the product registration (for steam). So it's all good.

I just think it's funny that I could get the "illegal" version far more quickly and easily than the legit version. But for games such as Civ, I like to support the game company, and actually buy the product, as I know I'll be spending several hours with it...

Anyways, purchase happily made. Thanks for that advice on downloading from Games Planet.

Cool

Yeah I had a tiny bit of trouble with Steam too: it was because where it says "do you live in this country currently" has nothing to do with your credit card, and that was locking up their system. I changed it to South Korea and it worked perfectly.

About the game though...it seems like its the best Civ ever, but with the worst launch ever. There's so many bugs and foibles that it seems like we're just beta-testing it for them.

You could have contacted Steam (like I did) and if you case was like mine (which it probably is) they would probably say:

"Sorry, the system had a different IP address on file (from your previous purchases) than your current one, so that is what was causing the problem. We fixed that.

By the way, please use this link to make purchases in the future: <insert link to US Steam store>"

I'll likely be purshasing Civilization V (and Worms Reloaded) from Steam, as soon as I can figure out how to get a debit card that will work online for non-Korean sites or link it to Paypal. I had a load of fun with Civ II and IV, but nothing between, so I'm hoping this is just as good. I'll check out the demo first though and see how well it runs - it seems like high requirements.

I gotta say: I have the game, and I'd recommend not buying it until Firaxis releases some MAJOR patches. It's basically a beta right now.
