Good points Dutch and Mosley.....
The man does not use the internet much (from what I gather). He does not post on here thats for sure. However, everything I said about him here I have discussed with him in person before.
I am not hiding or anything of the sort.
The dude stays here but it truly makes him miserable. My question was and remains why would anyone (including me) stay in a place that makes him miserable when he could very easily find work with equal or superior monetary conditions in a place that would not make him so unhappy.
The fact that Hank does not like it here is a moot point for me. I do not care what he likes and dislikes and we get along quite well when we do end up chatting at the bar.
Its just baffling to me why he would put himself through it all, day in and day out.
It can't be the money because the money we make here we can make in other countries (sometimes more). Its not the ease with which we make this money as other ESL jobs (or other jobs) pay just as much (or more) for the same work or less work.
No need to really answer for Hank in particular. He is just one guy but his attitude is not unique. Its the basic choice that puzzles me.
Like I said, he does not need to defend himself as I am not attacking him (this was not my intent at all). I am wondering about his choice. |

Well actually, on the flip side of that, there are of course probably those resident here, that constantly complain about immigrants in their own countries, whilst still complaining further about Koreans and the way they live their lives in Korea. In a word, whiners. |

I wouldn't argue with that. However, I don't fit that description. I am pretty consistent in my condemnation of immigration policy back home, while adjusting to Korean culture. I learn the language, and work hard. Indeed, I would go as far to suggest that the British should learn from Korea as far as preservation of national identity is concerned. Certainly my hometown is a mess. A sea of moaning foreigners who need a giant kick up the backside. I even recall one incident where Pakistani extremists held an anti Jew rally. The police even allowed them to hold up signs which called for Nazi style pogroms. On another occasion some Iranians moaned because their beds(provided by the government) weren't comfortable enough. Bastards. |

Homer, do you suppose Hank can really get a job in his own country?
Or does he just say he can?
I can't get a job in my own country either, but at least I'm honest. |

Tomato,
He has a teachers license from Manitoba. He can legally teach in Canada if he wants too.
Unless he commited some major crime of course. |

Oooohhh, he's a Toban. That actually explains a lot. There are four kinds of Tobans:
1. those that love it and stay
2. those that loathe it and leave
3. those that leave and still hold a special place in their hearts for that whacky province
4. those that bitch and moan about every other place they go because of a deep seeded insecurity resulting from Manitoba's image within Canada. These same usually hold that conservative bent that also makes them mighty fearful of change. like they managed to get out of a place they didn't like and now will be stuck in a place they hate for fearing of making another move.
I'm thinkin' Hank's a number four
and i can say all this 'cause i'm a number three.
that's a real light gloss, but if you want to know more about Hank's personality I can dig into the Toban's psyche some more. You are dealing with something much larger than Korea here, be careful. |
