i saw a guy with his hand down on the slot button taking a nap, just waiting for the machine to take all his money.

there were so many bloody people there that you cant even watch a blackjack table, nevermind try to play at one. picture dongdaemun Culture/History Station at rush hour with slots and blackjack tables...thats wat it was like. people were pushing you even if you werent near a machine or table. I think ill stick to 7 Luck in gangnam...

now i know why koreans cant gamble in seoul, they wouldnt go to work. if i didnt know any better (i dont think i do), i'd say everyone that was there was a degenerate...

It's not just Koreans that are crazy when it comes to gambling, MANY asians act like it's their last day on earth when they're in a casino. Maybe it's in the blood?

What is shocking are the amount of loan sharks around the casino. They must make a fortune.

Korean friend told me that most casinos in Korea were banned and Koreans banned from the casinos in Seoul as they are really extreme gamblers.

Apparently where the casinos were there were tons of pawn broker stores, used car lots as they would keep chasing their losses and literally sqaunder away the family's assets away in one night including all money and then the car, the jewelery. Apparently a lot of violence too as they would be convinced they were being cheated.

Sounds like the wild west.

Or perhaps some areas of Vegas....

With all the pawn shops around, do you suppose it'd be a good place to go shopping? I went to a pawn shop in Myeongdong, but the goods, while in great condition, weren't much cheaper than new. Would the Kangwonland area be any better?

From what I've seen, gambling addiction is more destructive than any other kind of drug or alcohol problem. I have friends here who have had generations of savings and wealth squandered away at the tables.

I went to Gangwonland once, and I totally understand why casinos are illegal here. There were hundreds of people lined up outside waiting to get in before it opened, just pacing back and forth. The most depressing thing I saw was a woman in line waiting for her ticket to get in pick up the phone, tell her husband that she was driving and couldn't talk, then walk into the casino with a stack of cash.

I went there once a few years ago and was horribly disappointed. The one game I was looking forward to playing, poker, was only available on machines. There were hardly any people there, and very few exciting amenities were offered. Needless to say, I became incredibly bored very quickly.

The restrictions they place on Koreans were pretty odd, too. From what I was told (which may not be correct; I didn't bother to verify any of it): it's the only Korean casino that allows Koreans access to gambling; Koreans are required to pay an entrance fee whereas foreigners are not; Koreans are only allowed entrance so many times per year, with local residents allowed less frequent visits; Koreans are only allowed to gamble so much money in a day while no similar restriction is placed on foreigners.

I was there skiing with a Korean friend and he wanted to see the casino, so we went. I didn't have my passport or ARC, since I had planned on only skiing. They wouldn't let me in the casino, even though I am clearly a foreigner. It was kind of weird, being denied entrance to a casino that I had no interest in seeing anyway.
