I was thinking about taekwondo again though I'm worried about my being out of shape and what I think is a lot of focus on high kicks.

Coupled with a proper diet and cardio, the martial art shouldn't matter too much. I'm biased towards boxing, kickboxing and muay thai because for me, there is no better work out than starting with a a jog or jumping rope; punching and kicking bags for three minute rounds for 30-45 minutes, then finishing up with some weightlifting and ab work. Also, Muay Thai kicks, because they require a full rotation, do less damage to one's knees (so I've heard).

However, gyms in Korea are hit or miss. If its between an active TKD or Hapkido class with adults and a passionate trainer and a Kickboxing gym
with kids and apathetic trainer, I would go with the former.

Send me a PM if you want details on how to get into shape through diet, exercise and martial arts. I've dropped 40 kgs in two years, 30 in the first year.

Hello guys, just a reminder, if you live in the Ansan area,
Hanyang University has a BJJ Club.

It meets Monday 6-8, Thursday 6-8, and Saturday 12-2. The instructor is an English professor so the classes are taught in English. He is a four stripe blue belt. We currently have six blue belts training on a regular basis.

The fee for non-students is 75,000 won for the entire semester (about 3 and months)

If you have any questions PM or post.

Hey,

I'm interested in learning Savate. Does anyone know of a school here in Korea or anyone that teaches it? Thanks.

Not that learning Savate is not interesting, but in a country with such high level taekwondo, hapkido and kickboxing, why would you use a French fighting style?

Yes, I know. I'm just not really interested in learning Taekwondo or Hapkido. I would prefer something along the lines of Savate as it would be more suitable for me. I know that there probably aren't any schools out there, but thought I would give it a try. If anyone knows of a school or teacher, please let me know. Thanks.

Anyone know the story with Martial Arts on Geoje Island?

I did a naver search on Savate and it seems it is almost non-existent in Korea. Savate isn't a popular martial art in most other countries and foreign martial arts as a whole are relatively new in Korea (except boxing and japanese styles) so you'd be hard pressed to find a gym here. The most you can do is somehow get in contact with someone who has learned in France. A post on naver indicated that a French master comes to Korea every year to hold seminars but didn't mention any other details like date or location.

You'd do better with kickboxing or boxing in my opinion.

Yeah, looks like it is a no-go for Savate. I'm thinking about trying Muay Thai instead. There is a school in the Itaewon area called Seoul Martial Arts. Anyone train there?

I think you might be talking about Body and Seoul, just down the road from Noksapyeong station

mma gym- team posse

Seoul- daerim station- exit 5, walk strait for 3-4mins until you get to the 5 가 리 (intersection) and make a right turn, then walk for about 3 more minutes but look across the street for a Team Posse sign, it is in the basement of the building good luck.

the pro/advanced class starts at 4 30pm. not sure what else they have.

Hey I tried to find it today but after I turned at the 5 가 리 street and walked for 2-7 mins I couldnt find a Team Posse sign. You got any more helpful directions to find it? Thanks

For free training, you guys could organize yourselves like this gym in Jeju-do. http://sites.google.com/site/jejudobrazilianjiujitsuclub/home

thanks sinclair for the information. i didn't have the intention to make this into a well organized official club, but who knows?

and fermentation, thanks for the concern, but personally, my goal isn't to hurt anyone. it's like playing tackle football with friends. just 'friendly' tackling, not going in for the kill.

Hey man, this is Matt. It was good rolling with you today, I hope you keep coming.

For anyone that is interested, I train at a 10th planet school in Seongnam right at the Taepyeong station exit. There is a free open mat on Saturdays at 2:00 and bjj/kickboxing every evening. Classes are in English and Korean.

Here is the daum site: http://cafe.daum.net/10thplanetjjseoul

Free open mat? That's awesome because I'm considering moving to Seongnam after my discharge. Is the BJJ/kickboxing free too, and who directs/teaches the class?

No, it isn't free during the week, but the prices are reasonable. The head trainer's english name is Leonard and he is really a great guy. He was an amateur boxer and he has had some mma fights, plus he is really good at bjj.
