I am planning on doing my marriage paperwork this week at the US embassy. I already set the appointment but just want to double check with anyone who has done the process before.
I need:
US Passport
Affidavit of eligibility of marriage (one copy)
Report and certificate of marriage (three copies)
Proof of Identity (they said alien card would work, anyone else use it? as I don't have my birth certificate)
$150
She needs:
Family relationship certificate (one in English, one in Korean)
Single status certificate (one in English, one in Korean)
Korean ID card
Is that it?
Do we need to bring anyone for witnesses?
Do we need to bring passport photos?
I posted this in the FAQ section but there is more traffic here and the other information is from 2003.
So the process is:
1) Go to the US embassy. Bring all of the documents from above. They will notarize the affidavit.
2) Go to the local Jongno-gu office. Give them the notarized affidavit, and the three copies of the certificate of marriage. They will sign all three and keep one.
3) Go back to the embassy and have them authenticate the two certificates. I'm guessing we pay at the beginning. Do we need to set up another appointment for when we go back to the embassy for this last step? I tried but it says I can only sign up for one appointment.
Then, I will be married in the US.
I have then read you can call home and have them register the marriage there to be registered in the US as well. (I read this is necessary for the F2 visa.)
Are there more documents that my fiance needs to bring to the ward office? She called them and they gave her a list of things but she called again to check on something and the list changed from the previous call so she is now worried.
Cheers! |

I got married last year. We didn't even need everyting the Embassy told us to bring in.
The process didn't take very long either. The appointment system is really useful. Even if you show up late you can still jump the line.
I have an F2 visa but I never called the US for any reason.
no witnesses needed.
I don't remember needing my passport except as an ID.
I don't recall needing any photos. |

Cheers,
The fiance keeps coming up with new confusing things she has heard and in turn confusing me.
I called the embassy and they said no photos or witnesses were needed but she heard from one Jongno-gu office worker they needed it for there.
Bloody annoying as she keeps flipping out and saying we have to do so much last minute as we have to translate this or translate that; bring this-bring that. Wish they would get their act together and stop confusing her. Let's hope no problems.
The F2 I doubt will be a problem. What did you have to show for the "financial stability" proof? We both have jobs?
Talked to SMOE and they said after an F2 you no longer need to do the FBI check but they "might" make it a requirement to double check the state check. |

Depending on which immigration officer you see you might need as much as 30 million in cash to make them happy.
mileage varies wildly. Some people haven't been asked for anything, others have been asked to provide all kinds of documents. If you're asked for all kinds of documents and can't provide them, you could end up in a bit of a pickle.
have your wife call immigration more than once and ask them in Korean what they need and then have her get a name or something. |

Your US Passport IS proof of identity. |
