Ive just found out I have a medical check up before leaving Korea in a month. Will this include a drug test? Unfortunately, I was smoking crap Filipino weed only last Saturday morning and I would hate for that to show up. I smoked a small amount every night from Wednesday to Saturday

Are you taking it to renew? If so... eesh. You probably won't get renewed.

Push the test back a couple of weeks and you should be okay, though. You only did it once and I'm hoping this wasn't a regular thing. Go to the sauna, do some cardio, etc...

Why do people do this kind of thing in Korea? Enjoy it back home, but here it's really not smart.

Why would you have to have a medical before leaving Korea? I guess the only advice I can give is delay it as long as possible. Keep coming up with excuses why you can't go.

However. you know Korea has a zero tolerance for any type of drug, including weed. You knew before hand that they just love to plaster foreigners names and pictures all over the news for getting busted with weed or failing a drug test. It's somewhat of a national past time. You knew all that, and were still immature enough to be blazing up? You deserve whatever is coming to you.

I have nothing against pot or pot heads. God knows I don't remember half of university because of it. But this isn't North America where the stigma of weed has essentially evaporated and it's well on it's way to essentially being decriminalized. This is North East Asia, where pot is considered to be just as bad as heroin. This is a part of the world that has decided to throw the book at even the most minor of offenders. If you're going to live here and work here, you have to play by the rules here. Simple as that.

*steps off soap box*

No In not taking it to renew, Im leaving in a month....they presented it as a routine thing....I had no idea they would give me a test right now....I was smoking in the Philippines not here

Any more advice or anyone know how long its likely to stay in my system?

I'm mainly worried it will mean my contract is terminated rather than comes to its natural end and Ill lose out on the bonus

You must be at a public school - they are doing their regular staff medical checks. You are leaving so you are not obligated to take it.

To answer your other question, it is a health and wellness check so they are not doing random drug testing. Relax or you will push your blood pressure up.

And a side note to those others who may be interested in doing things like this in the Phils or Thailand - you can (and usually do) get 3-5 years in prison for simple possession of pot. Being seen (or reported as) smoking it and having a pee test demanded/done (probable cause not required - this ain't the US) and a positive result can get you a substantial fine and a month or 3 in jail while you await trial (much longer if you decline to pay the fine).

The same thing is happening at my school. Both Korean and Foreign teachers have to get this check done. They said it has nothing to do with renewing your visa as it doesn't check for the usual STD's and Koreans have to get is done as well. It is simply a government mandated check to just see how "healthy" the population happens to be at the moment.

I have had to do this same check for the last 3 years. They have never given me a drug test (that I know of).

Yes, I am sure.

If they wanted a drug test it would be the police asking (demanding) and not your co-teacher informing you of a medical check in the near future.
