I do not understand why so many people go nuts over this show. It is the perfect example of mediocre television. There is NOTHING outstanding about it. Hopefully everyone dies this season and the show ends. Congrats public, you continue to have terrible taste.

I love the lead, but I've always felt it got off on cheap thrills while lacking any real depth. In the echelon of awesome cable television, I'd definitely put it behind The Wire, Oz, Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Mad Men, and Breaking Bad, in no particular order.

You nailed it on the head about Dexter! But I guess that's what the public wants... cheap thrills over quality. And you're completely right about the other shows you listed. Except those are god-tier shows which don't belong in the same category as Dexter.

Maybe I just dislike the show because I can't stand the lead. I can't stand both the actor and the character of Dexter. People hail Michael C. Hall as some kind of acting genius when he's really playing quite a boring character. He speaks in a monotone, zombie-like voice in every hour-long episode with a kill here or there (WOW!) and people go crazy over that. The Clear Eyes guy could play Dexter and do the job justice (whatever meager amount that might be). And why people would ever get attached to the character of Dexter is beyond me.

The other characters in the show are also some of the worst on TV. Deb and Quinn? LOL! And why does it seem like the show kills off all the attractive women and keep the uglies goin' strong? It's a bit shallow, but hey, when it comes to TV and movies, you have certain expectations.

Throw in Dexter's hallucinations of his dad, constant flashbacks to when he was a baby, cliched dialogue, and a few other negatives and you have yourself one MEDIOCRE show.

Agreed. I've made it through some real stinkers (Lost comes to mind), but didn't make it through season 1 of Dexter.

But everyone on The Wire is average to ugly. Only managed to get through the first episode of Six Feet Under, but don't recall any lookers on that one either. Your expectations seem a little inconsistent.

I've only watched season 4, but that's only because I love John Lithgow.

That's basically pinning a significant portion of my enjoyment of a show on how the cast looks; which is incorrect.

However, it was my fault for not clearly expressing exactly why I dislike Dexter. It's purely mindless entertainment. The reason I even started this thread was because I wanted to see if anyone else felt it WASN'T the groundbreaking, revolutionary show everyone makes it out to be.

Sure, no lookers on The Wire or Six Feet, but those were GOD TIER shows like I said. Those shows don't need much else to keep me interested. They engaged you and kept you in with quality storylines and dialogue (and in the case of the Wire, average people only played into the authenticity of the show).

Dexter isn't a deep show. It certainly isn't a quality show. If something doesn't have much to it, I think it should at least look good.

Here's a review which summarizes my feelings on the show perfectly... except I still think Michael C. Hall's performance sucks donkey.

Never really liked him, but only because I didn't enjoy 3rd Rock. I'll admit he's a great actor.

Fun fact: He shares the same birthday as my brother. A fun fact for me, haha.

I've heard that she gets better as the show progresses, but I stopped watching after the first season because I found Deb to be so codependent and incapable of making decisions on her own that it was almost offensive to women. How is a character like that possibly likeable and relatable? Sorry, but I'd rather spend time watching shows with interesting people rather than watch shows where leads are so useless that they need babysitters.
