I've been in Korea for 6 months now and I just got the exact details on my winter holiday. I work at the hagwon which must not be named and I am aching for a great vacation. My vacation starts Christmas Day, also my birthday.
This will be the only time I have left the US (minus living in Korea) and I want to have a really good trip. I will be traveling with a friend and my cousin as well. My friend wants to go to Malaysia maybe but none of us are particularly set on anything. So I guess I'm trying to decide between Malaysia, Vietnam, Phillipines, or Thailand. Like I said, this is really my first trip ever and I am a bit worried about securing a flight out of Incheon and traveling throughout SEA. What kind of advice can you offer me for getting a decent flight and safe travel? Thanks. |

It is just about the most expensive day of the year to fly on.
That said, contact the airline directly and book/pay early for best pricing.
You may (MAY) get a better price by waiting till the last minute but don't count on it. More than likely you will get wait-listed and pay as much as or more than you would by booking and buying now from a discount airline.
(remember, it is less than 90 days away).
As to the WHERE to go, it would depend a lot on what diversions you are looking for.
Do be aware that as a tourist (even in places that are generally cheap to live in) you will end up spending on average about $100 per day (plus airfare). Toss a lady or two into the entertainment mix and you can spend even more if you are not very careful.
Pattaya (in Thailand) is the Disneyland for adults (but the rides are more expensive and it has been said that they are also more fun). The beaches on the nearby islands are pretty good too. Same can be said for Phuket. Things are a bit more laid back on the Gulf Islands but are still an adventure.
The Philippines have been covered extensively here in the forum. Just do a simple search for "cebu", "bohol" or "Boracay" and enjoy the threads. It is better than the lonely planet for information.
Can't tell you much about Malayasia.
Indonesia has some interesting places and Bali or Kota Kinbalu are among them (but not the only places worth mentioning - there are many others).

I got tickets for December 23 to Manila. I paid very little, but I bet they are sold out or jacked up by now. But always worth a try.

As far as safety, just maintain some level of common sense and you will be okay. |

I just checked. There are flights. 250,000 each way, so 500,000 or so. 526,000 won including tax to Manila.
You could then take a domestic hop or a bus to Subic Bay or Puerto Galera. |

A random question in the same vein: is it at all economical to take a ferry to Japan (or China) instead of flying for a vacation? |

Yes to both destinations if you have the time.

I can't recommend Indonesia highly enough. Not Bali, though. The island of Flores is incredible - beautiful, few tourists, friendly - and the city of Labuan Bajo in Flores has some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world. |

9 days really isn't enough to do Vietnam justice, in my opinion.
You could definitely have a great party vacation in Thailand or the Philippines, with some travel around thrown in. Bangkok & Manila both have enough going on that you could spend your entire vacation in either one, but I recommend exploring! Beach it up for a few days too so you don't come back to Korea feeling exhausted.
Both places are cheap to drink in, and cheap to live in. Try to buy your tickets through a Korean travel agent for the best prices. |
