Quote:
China has warned the Nobel Peace Prize committee not to award the prize to well-known dissident Liu Xiaobo.

The Chinese foreign ministry said giving him the prize would be against Nobel principles.

Mr Liu is serving a long prison sentence for calling for democracy and human rights in China.

A foreign ministry spokeswoman told reporters in Beijing that Liu Xiaobo was serving a jail term because he had violated Chinese law.

Awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize would send the wrong message to the world, the spokeswoman said.

It would run contrary to the aims of its founder to promote peace between peoples, and to promote international friendship and disarmament, she added.

Mr Liu is serving an 11-year prison sentence for drafting Charter 08, which called for multiparty democracy and respect for human rights in China.

The ruling Communist Party perceived this to be a threat against it.

More than 100 Chinese scholars, lawyers and campaigners have urged the Nobel Peace Prize committee to honour him this year.

The former Czech president, Vaclav Havel, has also voiced his support for the campaign.
Trade talks

The head of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Geir Lundestad, said on Monday that a senior Chinese official had warned him that awarding the peace prize to Liu Xiaobo would affect relations between Oslo and Beijing.

China and Norway are now engaged in talks over a bilateral trade deal, which some say could serve as a blueprint for an agreement between China and the European Union.

Energy-rich Norway is also keen to export its offshore exploration know-how to China.

The Norwegian oil firm Statoil said last month that it was hoping to look for shale gas in China.

China was furious when the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, the year of the Tiananmen Square crackdown by Chinese authorities on protesters.

The government tried to exert pressure on the committee last year when another dissident, Hu Jia, was nominated for the prize.

The committee will announce this year's winner in 10 days.

LOL, china trolling the entire world.

I wouldn't think anyone still takes the Nobel Peace Prize seriously after last year's decision.

Well, that settles it.

Totally true.

Although I personally 'like' Obama, in no way did he deserve this once respected and highly honorable prize. You have to work for it. You have to have done stuff. He's on his way, perhaps, but the prize was given waaaay too early.

If they had waited like 5 years, then OK, I can see it. But still. Obama, as much as I like the guy, has actually got more police state action going on in the middle east than Bush who everyone considered a war-monger. I know it aint his fault so much... but, just sayin!

"You have to have done stuff."

Absolutely. What is he on his way to doing, do you think?
I don't not like him, but he fooled lots of idiots.
Why is the war mongering not his fault?

China ain't gonna do [Mod Edit]

This ought to make the Committee even more prone to giving the prize to Liu.

I agree- I believe that Kim Dae Jung deserved to get the prize more than Obama did. It comes to show that the prize, as well as other internationally organized awards, is sometimes motivated for political reasons and not solely on merit.

However, I don't think China has the right to threaten the Nobel organization for who they decide to nominate or give the award to.
It shows that China is actually overstepping its political clout and playing the Nietzschean 'bermensch' card far too many times.
Yes, the US has been accused of doing the same thing, but not as blatantly as China.

The Kim Dae Jung gov't paid North Korea for that staged summit meeting (that amounted to nothing).

Not saying I think Obama deserved the Nobel (because I don't), but the KDJ one was highly sketchy (completely unwarranted?).

Not really- KDJ paved the way for inter-Korean commerce, tourism and family reunions that were unheard of before, especially during the junta years. And aside for a few 'skirmishes', the borders were relatively calm during his tenure.
For bringing some sense of 'normalcy' to the most heavily-militarized border in the world (besides Israeli borders), he did merit some recognition.

Yeah, NK got themselves nukes and detonated them while they continued with their tantrums. The Sunshine Policy was a resounding success.

Yeah, I love these fools that want China to be in charge of everything. Wait until they enslave you. Then it will be, "Oh, I wish the US were top dog again." Prepare to bow before your Chinese lords, you serfs.
