WASHINGTON (AFP) - Actor Tony Curtis, best known for his comedic turn as a cross-dressing musician in "Some Like It Hot," has died at the age of 85, US media reported Thursday, citing his family.

A representative for Curtis' daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, confirmed his death to Entertainment Tonight, the television program said on its website. ABC News also reported the death.

I've never seen Some Like It Hot, though it's available here in Gwangju, so maybe I'll give it a memorial screening this weekend. I remember, as a kid, being impressed by his performance as the titular character in The Boston Strangler.

If I had to say, I'd guess that most people about my age and younger know him as Laurence Olivier's wannabe boytoy in Spartacus(I believe those scenes were cut from the original version in 1962, and only restored later, after which point they became something of a gay punchline). I remember a Flintstones episode about an actor called Stony Curtis, who was starring in a movie called Slave Boy, though as a kid I didn't get the reference.

Hell, I didn't know he was still alive.

Old Bernard Schwartz was in some real stinkers along the way. Two of his movies I did like, tho, were THE DEFIANT ONES & THE GREAT IMPOSTOR.

Well, ya gotta pay the bills, eh?

And I just found out that, in The Flinstones episode I referenced earlier, he actually did the voice of Stoney Curtis.
