I have 14 days left on my tourist visa. The director of my hogwon finally picked up my medical check paperwork from the hospital and sent me on my way to the immigration office. I asked her if she had my diploma (just curious because I had mailed it to South Korea three months ago and hadn't seen it since) and she said, "oh no, you don't need that for your ARC."
Then the immigration officer informed me that I would need my original diploma APOSTILLED in order to get an ARC.
I don't have time to get my diploma apostilled before my tourist visa runs out, meaning....what? What happens if I can't get my ARC before the 90-day period? If I go to the immigration office on day 110, will they say, "uhh, you've been here illegally for 20 days - have fun being deported"? |

umm.... you can't get an ARC if you are on a tourist visa/stamp.
If you fail to register before your 90 days are up (after entering on an E2) you will be in violation of immigration law, subject to fines, a blackmark in your file (meaning you have to return home for a consular interview EVERY time you change your visa/employer and if carried to the extreme, you will be picked up and arrested/ordered out of the country.
You have 2 choices for dealing with your degree problem. Go to YOUR embassy and swear an affidavit of authenticity to attach to a copy of your degree (with the original in tow) or have it verified by the KCUE ( http://english.kcue.or.kr/ ). Your employer will have to do the verification process.
In the meantime you had better take care of your immigration problem (visit them to deal with not getting registered in time - they may accept the paperwork that goes with your application for KCUE verification in the interim).

Thanks for the info and whoops - yeah, I'm here on an E2.
As I've been miserable in Korea ever since I got here and the thought of going through MORE of the Korean government's bs to remain in misery for another 10 months makes me slightly nauseous...I've been thinking of pulling a runner I know that's not a good way to deal with the problem, but if I do end up getting on a plane to escape Korea, what would happen? Would the school try to track me down to get reimbursed for the airfare?
I hate Korea :/ |

IF you get on a plane and leave, nothing will happen. They may try to call you or send you some nasty e-mails. Just filter them to your spam box and don't worry about it.
The only consequence would be not being able to return to work in Korea for a while (up to 3 months if you cancel your visa on the way out and till it expires if you are American and don't get it canceled).
