So my friend did this. We counted it once and he had like 150,000 or so in coins. I was impressed so last week decided to give it a go.

So far I save a chun won and any 500 won coins in my pocket when I get home everyday.

So this evening I have around 10,000.

But then I realised 'wait a sec! I would still have this in my wallet anyway! Even if I have 100,000 in a year, I'd still have it in my wallet or bank account anyway! This is pointless!'

Am I missing something? is my logic flawed.... help me out here...

I guess if I was still a compulsive gambler that would be good as I'd come home after a huge loosing sesh and have enough to eat ramen until payday at least.

But for the average joe what is the point?

i use a 2 litre bottle of water. Keep my 500wons and everything else goes in. Stops your pockets getting weighed down with too much change,

They make perfect sense to me. I can't carry that many around without being annoyed.I try to buy something small with the change and use, say, 4 coins, and I get 7 coins back in change.
I don;t have time to sit around working out the precise change and holding everyone up on the spot so its easier to just cast them aside when I get home.

Use on bus and subway as well as other small purchases like water bottles or whatever else you buy in small marts. If you buy an onion at the street market, use coins. You just gotta remember to keep some on you or they do quickly build up to be a 20 pound mass of metal pieces.

I said if the money *wasn't being saved* - as in, if you keep it on you to spend - you are more likely to spend it than save it. Capiche? Gooood.

Edit - And for the record, against what you were implying, a degree rarely has a prerequisite of common sense so your point is, well, wrong.

When I lived in Gemany and they had these 5 mark coins, I'd always dump my change into a coin jar.

Why? Cause for some reason or another, I'd easily lose some of the coins and at 1.4 mark to teh dollar, you don't want to do that.

When the jar was about 1/3 full, I'd have enough dough for a full blown night out.

Korea just has chump change, so don't worry about it. Your logic is not flawed.

lol having to sift through your pocket like little old women paying for chips and a drink at Family Mart. I dont give a s*** if its lame, i have a money jar and its up to 175,000W. thats saving since i got here in January. I plan on taking a day trip with that money a little later. Whats wrong with saving it for a rainy day, its fun.

Nah, I'm cool with saving. All I'm saying is that if your spending habbits are constant - you're going to have the same ammount of money whether it's in a jar, your pocket or in the bank lol!!!!

It's not like if I didn't save those few 500 won coins I would have spent that much more on that day just coz I didn't drop em in a jar!!

If your 175,000 wasn't in ya jar - it would be in ya bank account as cumativiley (sp i know) it you'd end up taking less out of the atm to get by on as you'd have more cash coin or notes accumulated on your personl!!!!!!

Yeah, earlier this year I had a change jar and it came to 160,000 for 11 months. Not bad.

I'd say it has less to do with change jars or spending it in general, just that there's so much change coming in to you that you can't find ways to spend it all in stores or whatever. There's just too much, plain and simple.
