Hi,
I asked about this question earlier, but I didn't get an exact answer. I checked the Dept of State's website about coming to Korea as a tourist, but it didn't mention anything about the ticket. I left Korea after my contract. about 5 weeks ago. I flew out on a round-trip ticket to Thailand and will be returning to Korea on Monday. Will immigration not let me in because I don't have a booked ticket out of Korea? What if I want to take the ferry to Japan? Will that count as my 'return ticket' out of Korea? |

Immigration probably won't care. They almost never do.
The airline MAY give you problems since THEY are the ones who get fined for letting you board the aircraft if you don't have onward passage and are refused by immigration for any reason.
Just be prepared to buy onward passage (refundable) or (pre) book a ferry ticket if you are really worried about it.

I think you could also buy an open-ended round trip ticket. The date for the return trip isn't set, when you know you're going to leave you call the airline to reserve a seat. I think it has to be within one year though. |

| Like I said, I already bought my round-trip ticket when I left Korea. That's how I left. So I am now returning on that round-trip ticket on Monday. That's why I'm wondering whether immigration will give me a hard time or not. I need to get back there to pick up the rest of my stuff, withdraw my pension money, buy a ticket out of there, and then head out. |

When I went home and returned to Korea on a round-trip ticket last year they asked me at immigration about my lack of a visa. I told them I was going to do a visa run to Japan in a couple weeks. That was the end of the conversation. |

I know what you said and I said that you had better be prepared to deal with the ticket agent at the check-in counter.
Just cause you left Korea on a round trip ticket from Korea does NOT mean they won't hassle you over not having onward passage from Korea on the trip back (as required for visa waiver entry since you no longer have a visa or resident status).

Round trip ticket from outside of Korea to Korea and back outside of Korea or onward ticket from outside of Korea to Korea to somehwere else outside of Korea is what's required. A round trip ticket from Korea to outisde of Korea and back to Korea doesn't cut it. |

I've flown one-way to numerous places. Sometimes it's no problem. Other times the airline I'm flying with brings it up. They tell me I need a ticket out, I tell them whatever made up story I have prepared. Stand firm, but don't go crazy. Eventually they should bring out a liability paper for you to sign. This paper basically says that they hold no financial responsibility should you get denied entry. Sign it and be on your way.
I have yet to be forced into buying another ticket, though I suppose it's a possibility that that will happen. |
