Lets see what some of us consider a fair offer here in Korea.

A fair offer for me would be 2 million for 30 hours, o/t at 20,000 won an hour, clean and comfortable 2 bed single apartment - fully furnished, return airfare, 50/50 medical, severance pay, walking distance to my school, 1 week paid holiday, plus public holidays, no split shifts. I don't think that is asking too much...

when people say airfare, is it common for that to be paid upon arrival or can you get people who will pay for it upfront?

What am I worth?

I consider myself priceless. (Others seem to debate that point. They are clearly fools.)

I am worth more than I get, but on the otherhand job satisfaction is worth what they pay me to do my job. So I basically sacrifice cash for job satisfaction.

I think a beginning teacher is worth about 2.0 plus the usual benefits. ( I don't count housing here)

Someone with a recognised TEFL Cert and 1 years' experience in Korea is probably worth about 2.2.

People who are qualified (DELTA/DIP TESOL) are worth more - 2.5-3.0 depending on whether they have a training/teacher assessment role.

An MA is not a pratical course so it just adds prestige and little benefit to the student.

Ordinary school teaching experience is not EFL so doesn't count for anything when teaching adults - can help with class control if teaching kids.



I think teaching kids is harder work so the yardstick that housing should be free if your teaching kids and subsidised a bit if it's adults...


i think this is a fair scale given what the students' expectations are and how much money the schools make.

I realise many schools just want clowns as teachers but many adult students want more and would pay for it if the schools had the vision to provide a choice.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter what we think we are worth. If you come here for the first time, you will be paid a very similar amount to those who have been here a few years and who work in the same line of business, e.g. hokwans.

Look at what you were doing at home and how much you were getting paid.

Look at the financial benefits you get here - housing, airfare, low tax, 1/2 medical. Add those up and add them to the salary you get.

Then look at how much you take home every month without having to pay any of the above.

How does that compare with your salary at home after you have paid for housing, higher tax, higher pension, higher national insurance etc.?

That should answer what you think you are worth, especially for the job that we do.

You may consider the following:
How many teach outside of Seoul? I hope you are rewarded for teaching in such an area.

The Credit Counseling & Recovery Service, which opened a job agency for blacklisted debtors in December. Most debtors, it seems, live in the Seoul area and saw it unappealing to move to the provinces despite offers of full-time jobs, meals and lodging.

Only a month ago up in Incheon, numerous teachers were arrested and deported on the spot who worked for an Education Department camp - others got large fines - it is worth adding the mistake in the paper work was the Education departments, but it was the foreigners who suffered.

Anything under $50 an hour is usually not worth it (unless it helps you make new contacts). For those that don't believe that, you're suckers.
Korean private English teachers make 40 G's an hour and up. For all you people who are happy making 30-35 an hour the guy who 'introduced' you to the job is making the same as you.

I get 2.3 per mo for 25 hrs per wk. I wanted 2.5 but the school wouldn't give it. I have 10 yrs experience, though. I have many privates and I chrge 50 per hr minimun.

But...It's better than my old job back in the states!

What is the value of your health? Are you compensated for working in an area that is bad for your health? Are you compensated for working in an area that is "unappealing"?
