One small restaurant in Seoul recently began charging 2,000 ($1.76) won for refills of kimchi, because not only has the price of cabbage been going up but, according to the owner, "some customers will ask for three or four plates of it." Personally i think 2,000 won is a little steep for one refill considering it already came free with a meal that probably cost less than 5,000 -- maybe she's just tired of pushy customers. Anyway, I don't think this will catch on like the kimbap inflation of a couple years ago. |

The grandma who makes my yulmu kimchi had to double her price, but she gives me extra goodies to make up for it. It's well worth it. Best stuff in Korea. |

This actually has me a bit concerned. Koreans start freaking out when they can't get kimchi. |

Good thing Kimchi is generally the last thing on my list of things to eat ^_^ (things that I don't dislike, that is) |

So this is where the artificial inflation is coming from? Three Koreans have already talked about this with me and for the first time ever we didn't have kimchi at lunch today. It doesn't seem to have struck anyone that this price increase probably has nothing to do with either increased demand or decreased supply. |

I'll do my part: I'll avoid any all Kimchi that I come across. I'm not certain how I'll stay healthy but I'll try my BEST! |

This is huge news. Korean buy kimchi like Americans buy gas. Everytime gas goes up in the US, people freak out, so it's not surprising to see a similar reaction in Korea. Fair enough, it's a big part of their grocery bill.
Pretty sure the price increase has to do with a poor harvest because of weather, and there just isn't as much kimchi going around. Expect to see more katduggi at school and less beaju kimchi. I HATE katduggi!!! |

it's gotten so bad the govt will temporarily suspend tarrifs so they can get their kimchi cabbage from China (which is probably 1/20th of their price).
However, I am sure the Korean "middleman" will still mark it up accordingly so it will merely be 1/10th of the local current price.
according to Korea Times, fresh produce inflation is running around 47%.
that's FORTY SEVEN PERCENT.
(and probably understated as usual)
Only in Korea (would such nonsense be allowed and tolerated)

It should not be called Kimchi Inflation; it should be called Kimflation. |

Yes, it's huge news here. One old lady interviewed at an E-Mart was almost in tears about the price of vegetables.
What do you expect, though, when all the farmland is being turned into high-rise tinderboxes, I mean apartments, and the government keeps the currency weak to promote exports. Just what Korea has--high inflation and high prices.
And my pardner, ol' Sheriff Lucky, ain't around to take aim at those high prices. |
