| Myanmar is very exotic for still being like the old days. You can get a cheap flight if you include the Bangkok to Rangoon (Yangon) with your fare from Korea or that small leg runs around $330 if purchased separately. Round trip from Bangkok to Yangon only added $120 my flight to Bangkok from Seoul. If you like exotic traditional culture, arts, music, nature, and super friendly people, it's hard to beat this little understood destination. It's tropical and in the Winter, exotic Ngapalii beach on the Bay of Bengal is open for business. I'm seriously considering a Winter trip of this sort. |

They were doing visa on arrival, but stopped on September 1st due to elections coming up on November 7th. If all goes well with the election and political situation, then you might get VOA or apply for visa in Seoul for $25 to go this Winter. I didn't meet any special restrictions on Americans. Only special visa restriction is bars journalists and media people come entering. While you can go as a tourist with a camera, you can't bring a film crew like BBC to make a documentary. Locals have no problem with filming as they want you meet them, film them, and you go tell their story so they are not forgotten. I filmed traditional festivals and shows as well as life in villages and such which is stunning. You will get a thrill out how kids laugh when you take their picture and show them on the little video screen.
Myanmar is one destination that warrants reading and research more than any other as to understand it and how to appreciate what you see and do there. I felt safe as can be, but know if you go running your mouth or passing out fliers, you'll get in trouble. I just let the locals guide the conversations as they know when it's OK to talk about controversial matters. The people I meet that didn't talk about the foul system didn't receive any dialog from me on any of that stuff. It's a great place to tour and will change you in many unexpected ways. The learning of another culture, especially one this special, doesn't stop when you leave Myanmar. |

Myanmar was definately on my radar and I've been reading good things about it recently. Thanks for that info ESLbound.
If you get to Kuala Lumpur with a cheap Air Asia flight, from there to Yangon is $25 - $30 each way including taxes! Lots of availability too for next summer.
Okinawa....get to Fukuoka $165 round trip from Busan, then use Skymark Airlines for a $110 round trip, if you can find their bargain fare availability. |
