I get the feeling this is endemic to working in Korea. My hagwon certainly operates in the same way, making up work and/or problems for the sake of validation.

The only valid change they could really introduce would be to require a TEFL certificate. But they won't..because they're mainly interested in appearance. |
They'd also lose a good chunk of their cheap/ready surplus if they mandated a real certificate (not a meaningless online cheapy). A lot of people come here who are pretty seriously broke when they step off the plane. |

They used to require a minimum 3yr degree, then it was a 4 yr degree, then they changed back to 3.
-They used to not require transcripts, then they did, then they changed back again.
-They used to require a notarised degree copy: then they wanted the original, then they changed back to a notarised copy then changed to an apostille.
-They used to require no CBC, then a notarised local CBC, then a national apostilled one.
-Documents used to be valid for 1 yr after notarisation: then it was 3 months, then they changed it to 6 months.

The best thing about this is that it does absolutely nothing to prevent or deter scandals such as the CPN case, or people teaching illegally. |

I went to immigration last week with my school's office manager. He informed about a week ago that the rules changed again bla bla. Told me dont worry. We walk into immigration with my alien card and 40,000 won and a promise to get all the documents submitted to immigration before my 1 year extension ends.
The immigration official kept asking me over and over where is your FBI background check. Office Manager "dont you have it?" Immigration officer "No I dont have it." Office manager/immigration officer rinse and repeat 10 plus times. Office manager bows immigration officer bows, I return this week to immigration to get a new alien registration card and a 1 year extended visa.
Buying Mr. Chon my office manager sam gyup sal and beer/soju.
Thank you Mr. Chon.
My advice bring a Korean to immigration with you if your already in Korea and say as little as possible. Things just magically smooth themselves out.

Haha, that's awesome. I'm not in Korea yet. Everything was smooth but it will just leave a sour taste in my mouth if I have to submit a whole new background check and apostille just because mine wasn't stapled together. |

After years of having to accept balding tattooed serial killers to fill their jobs, the Koreans are now relishing rejecting perfectly good candidates for silly reasons. There seems to be a new arrogance in town, thanks to the economic recession. |

I've done my homework regarding the transition to Korea, and it seems as if they went from one extreme to another. Maybe one day they will find that perfect balance. |
