i'm planning on leaving korea next year and i'm already trying to get settled on my next location. i've noticed most of the better jobs require an ESL certificate of some sort, and i was hoping someone could recommend the most internationally adaptable certificate online course? also i'm looking for the cheapest as well!
thanks in advance |

Leave Korea and head to Thailand for a month to do your CELTA. Low cost of living and fun to be had in your free time. |

Most of the on-line courses are NOT widely accepted outside of Korea.
None of them are accepted by reputable schools.
Any decent school will expect your TESOL to be 120 hours with a minimum of 6 hours of observed practicum (with REAL students - not classmates).
A decent TEFL/TESOL cert can be obtained in Thailand for about US$1000.
A CELTA, Trinity TESOL or SIT TESOL will cost about US$2000.
Unless you plan to party your nights away while you are doing your course you can get by on about $500 for your living expenses for the month.

There are a few in Korea that are run by or under the supervision of American universities. In those cases, you get a TEFL certificate from a university in the states. I think that a couple are 4 week courses (full time). Those may be useful to you elsewhere in Asia.
It all depends on where you want to teach next. Do you have an idea about where you want to head next? |

I'm with most people and think CELTA may be your best bet.
First, it's very intensive and I wouldn't expect to do a lot of partying, but you will walk away with a lot of practical ideas/lessons/resources to use in your classes. It's 120 hours of classroom instruction plus several hours of observed teaching.
Second, if you decide to further your career in ESL/EFL after working in Korea, the CELTA is a good stepping stone to the DELTA or a MATESOL or Applied Linguistics.
Third, the other posters are correct about its recognition. CELTA is the preferred certification in Europe.
Also, where are you going? Not sure if you're American or not, but if you're going back home to the states, I'd say do it in New York. Teaching House offers professional instruction and you'll have loads of opportunities to teach students from various cultural/language backgrounds.
But you do have other options, just depending on your needs and budget. Good luck! |
