Tbroad is horrible and their CS sucks. Started having random issues last month with periods of no service and they did jack shit to help us out. Guy came over to have a look and told us someone was "hacking" our line and "stealing our bandwidth" and it would take 2 weeks to track him down. lol.

Cancelled, went with KT. KT paid the Tbroad cancellation fee for us. Flawless connection, better ping overseas.

Good to see that it was not just my own connection (SK).

Any overseas server would reply (using speedtest.net) with less than 10% of the speed reported for the Korean server. Maximum download speeds (using DL accelerator) under 500K on what is either a 100Mbps connection (what I ordered) or a 50Mbps connection (what I believe I got from SK).

Has lasted for 3-4 days now but Torrents were not affected at all...

Yesterday it was back to normal but this morning the same problem.

"Powercycling" (I usually call it "pulling the plug") is the first thing I do, but didn't seem to work.

I'm not happy with SK so if there are any good recommendations for alternatives, could you post them here? I was on Gangnam Internet before but have since moved to Hannam-dong; KT made an offer that was too expensive, couldn't find a link or contact to LG. Crying or Very sad

Yeah... I believe SK is the ONLY net provider without English service. When they were trying to install Internet at my new apartment, 15 different people must have called me--I'm assuming to confirm my appointment. I guess even if you schedule one, they won't come without a confirmation. And I guess their solution to a foreigner is to call them repeatedly even though they know said foreigner cannot speak Korean.

If my MegaUpload speeds continue to suck, I will change to KT or LG.

I'd appreciate some recent experience with Korean ISP. As I said, the offer from KT was 50% more for internet-only than I paid for internet + cable TV with Gangnam Internet (GS). But their English service was pretty good.

SK on the other hand was a joke. I found a website where they had conflicting English instructions how to dial through to an E-speaking operator, basically they ask in Korean if you want Engish or Japanese, but I still ended up with someone speaking Korean only.

With the help of a colleague I got through to their first "English Speaker". That was a joke, the lady must have read off a cheat sheet because she was only asking me "Internet?" and then completely ignored my questions about the different packages, speeds, prices and discounts. She was also uninterruptible. I gave up, hung up, but they already had my number (using an SK mobile, darn) and she called me back several times. Same play. Finally I had my colleague tell her that (a) I don't believe that she could really speak English (he said she insisted she did) and (b) that she was not listening and should speak slower.

So the next call, she seriously talked to me in the manner of Dory when she's speaking "Whale" in "Finding Nemo"!!! (what a great movie). So I told her never to call me again and hung up.

30 mins later they found a guy, rough English but a good listener. This is how I got my internet in the end, because SK was only 20% more expensive than GS Internet (w/o cable TV still).

The guy (calling from his mobile so that I could get back to him) told me that onthe phone menu, I should just shout "English please!!" and hang up; eventually someone would call me back. Must be like the number they show in taxis.

So yeah, the English CS of SK could use some improvement.

Installation was better; the cable guy did a great circus act connecting my 5th floor apartment with the junction box across the street. For lack of other tools he did cut my satellite cable and connected the internet to it instead. So, there's definitely no more TV in my house now. But I don't watch TV (later found out that when you have a Korean woman/date in your house, TV becomes important to keep them from getting bored while you're in the shower).

I'm sure some other company can do better than this?

(Note: GS Internet (Gangnam Internet) 100Mbps + cable TV 32,000 Won, my first SK bill was 48,000 (might be because of installation fees or modem?, KT should have been 48,000 each month).

Give em a call and let them know. When I called the English help person, she said one other foreigner had reported it. Maybe if 50 report it they will check on it.
She may offer to send over a A/S (After Sale) guy. The A/S guy told me resetting the modem pulls a new IP which can help all kinds of problems. Actually it did help. So reset your modem first, tell C+M no need to send the A/G guy (or let him come, it's free and they might find something), because it is an external connection problem of some kind.

I've tried powercycling (its pretty much the first thing I do always when the connection starts acting up) and it made absolutely no difference. It hasn't made any difference for weeks, though I still end up doing it out of habit and that tiny fringe of hope that maybe, just maybe this will be the time it works. I'll give them a call tomorrow.

Yes, this is normal. Any overseas connection has to go through the shared underwater cable. 100Mbps is in country or any land connection. No provider can control the speed over the underwater cable.

I had some similar trouble with SK a few months ago. I filled out the support request on their site asked to have someone who speaks english called me and the next day an english speaking engineer called me.

we ran some tests and SK found some kind of route issue overseas. They applied a fix and everything was good after that.

Well, it has been working close to normal the past 2-3 days now. Regarding overseas servers, I understand that the speeds and pings are worse than a local server, but (with a D/L accelerator) I never had problems getting at least 40% of the nominal speed and most of the times 60-80%. Suddenly getting less than 10% of the former bottom performance clearly means a technical issue.

Ultimately I'm just happy they didn't simply throttle the filehosting sites Rolling Eyes

Being thrown back to dial-up speeds really shows you how many websites are now using Flash, huge graphics and other bandwidth-eating eye candy.
