I just started working in an elementary school in Korea and was wondering about my options to increase my knowledge and paycheck.
1)What, if there is one, is the best certificate to get? I plan on teaching in Asia and possibly moving to Europe after and teaching there.
2)Also, is it best to do the training online?
This may be a commonly asked question, so if you could include a thread if you come by it. Thanks! |

First of all, doing an online course may get you a small pay bump here, but it is completely worthless outside of Korea. If you really want to learn about teaching methodology and get some actual teaching practice in, then I strongly suggest that you take the CELTA course. |

If you plan on teaching in Europe you will have to do the CELTA at some point |

Any old cheapo TEFL course (100 hours) will get you the bump in Korea and give you some idea in the classroom. You can find them for as little as $200 (or a bit less) and can do them on-line during your "desk warming time".
IF you plan to work outside of Korea you can pretty much forget about the on-line courses. The STANDARD would be 120 hours (on-site) and includes 6 hours of observed practicum with real EFL/ESL students. Thailand is a popular place to do a TESOL cert. The average cost is about US$1000 for a 30 day/120 hour course.
IF you want to head for Europe as an ESL teacher after your stay in Asia (and if you have an EU passport (if you are Canadian, American or from SA you can't)) then you will want one of the popular "branded" courses like the CELTA, Trinity TESOL or SIT TESOL certifications.
These will run about US$2000 and take 30 days to complete (on-site). There are teaching/testing centers all over the planet. For those in Asia, again, Thailand is a popular place to do it (low cost of living while you do your course).

Thanks for that information. Ok, so since I don't have 30 days of paid vacation to go to Thailand, would you suggest that I just do the 100 hour online TEFL now and then think about doing something more extensive if I decide move from Korea in a year? |

look at the British council in Seoul. They offer CELTA courses but I am not sure how they are running them (full time or part time).

I looked up the British council in Seoul and they teach CELTA classes on thuesday, thursday, and saturday mornings, so that will not work. There are soooo many different websites. Is there one particular one that is better? I have been looking at http://www.tesolonline.com
Thank you so much! |

Online TEFL was like $180 and bumped my pay $180 per month. Took about 10 hours total and was obviously worth it.
However, as other have said it's not worth much outside of Korea. |

As a setup for Esl as a profession internationally, Celta seems superior as it leads into Delta more easily. In Korea when I was applying for jobs 2 years ago the recruiters and schools hadn't a clue what it was however and were more interested in a quickie TEFL I did beforehand.
A decent Tefl course has a lot in common with a Celta but there are plenty of useless ones around, Celta seems more standardized. Generally speaking they are looking for 100+ or even 120+ hour Tefl courses these days to qualify for extra pay in Public schools. |

Before you hand over your money, check with your PS that they will bump your pay immediately. When I did an online course, they wouldn't actually bump my pay until I started the next contract (6 months later). I was told this is GEPIK policy. If they won't bump it immediately, and you plan on going somewhere outside of Korea after this contract, wait and do something more substantial than the cheapo online course later on. |

ticktock I was marked down when i came here first as not having a relevant Tefl alike question until they verified my CELTA, I received my bump in pay and arrears directly after the certification came through. I'm with a public school Gepik too and it ran the gambit of inspectors etc so check again - it doesn't sound right! |

So, would you say the $1000 TESOL certificate is the best value for the North Americans teachers here who want to move on to other countries outside of Korea?
Could you recommend a particular TESOL program in Thailand? |

Here's a good course that is cheaper and useful for teachers who are already teaching... for anyone interested
Only prob is...you have to be working in a teaching job already... so you could come and do it once you have placement...
Check it out...

Im in the middle of my course and I've been here in Korea for years but decided to finally get a cert. this one is great if you have experience but no certs. on your resume.
^-^
AND it's only 690,000 won! ^^ ( this is a legit TESOL course that developed recently in Korea ) |
