This incident on the Seoul subway made the Korea Times front page today.

Oddly labeled a "brawl" between an old woman and a teenage girl (Korea Times) it's making the rounds on Youtube etc today.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTiG8KA-fzw

What's a bit shocking to me is that no one really stepped in to stop the situation. The old lady seemed clearly wrong in pushing her and putting her hands on her. I wonder how far the crowd would have let it go on?

Just curious if anyone saw it or something like it? What do people think they would do in the situation if they were there or it happened to them?

I have to say I'd act polite and try to ignore her but it's also "not in my culture" to have someone hammering on me without some self defense.

The older woman seemed nuts really.

I saw this with the gf yesterday. Apparently the girl sat down next to the old lady and had mud on her shoes. The old lady said move your feet, the middle school student acted flip and the rest is what you see.

Check out the subway dance videos. The techno guy is pretty good.

I get that the lady was a bit peeved but it's over the top going after someone like that don't you think?

I want to say I would do something... but what? Maybe you could find a person older than the women to tell her to stop, otherwise... I'm out of ideas.

I showed my coworkers this video, the japanese teacher had seen it, my coteacher had not. Apparently, from what the japanese teacher had heard, it was only because the girl sat with her legs crossed and that the old lady took offense to it.

Goingtothecountry, you SAW this? In person? Did you see mud, or did you hear that's what it was? That would make more sense. From what my coworkers have said, the news didn't report anything about a reason other than young girl crossed legs, old woman took offense.

A quick survey of the teachers in our office shows that one would step in, the other four would be sheep. Personally, it's a really tough call. Not knowing the language well enough to really know 100% what was going on, it would be a bad idea. Also, being a foreigner physically getting in between to Koreans also seems like a bad idea. Finally, being a man, getting between two woman seems like a bad idea. Two guys, that's another story, but personally, it'd have to be a blatantly obvious situation and the guy would really need my help before I jumped up on a K subway to intervene.

That's shocking to you? You've not lived here long then?

I'd have jumped in as soon as the old lady grabbed for the girl's hair and the girl started screaming. And by jump in I mean separate them and yell a bit (야, 하지마!!), not start throwing blows at the old lady Smile There's always the chance of getting arrested but I couldn't live with myself if I didn't do something.

No I haven't lived here long. Honestly, isn't there a sense of "social order" or something beyond kissing the old woman's ass on "principle"?

After seeing a homeless man defecate, another homeless man smoke crack and a homeless woman pee on the subway, this is akin to WWF. Pass the beer can and Deli Manjoo, please!

Yeah, I agree with you - might not even be a good idea but I agree with you.
