Scott Pilgrim vs The World: Directed by the same guy who did Shawn of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, so you can expect some good laughs. It's also a pretty good adaptation from the comic, and the fight scenes are pretty damn impressive. An interesting spin on a 'romantic comedy'.

Shutter Island: Someone else mentioned it here, and I have to agree that it is a must.

Red Vs Blue, Season 8: I'm just gonna call it a movie because I bought it recently. If you're into video games and just silly humour, then I would say watch the whole series. But I just recommend this season in paticular just because they finally included CG fighting sequences. And of course, nice thing about the series is you can watch it all online, for free. Doesn't take too much time either since each episode is about 5-8 minutes.

when i watched shutter island, i thought to myself "please don't let the ending be this, dont' let the ending be this" and not to my surprise, the ending was that.

Shutter Island was atrocious and hammy. How the heck did Scrocese descend from such heights as Goodfellas, Raging Bull etc to making this raging farce with it's silly, instantly obvious and conceited 'ID' type doppleganger plotline? Great opening scene reminiscent of his earlier 'Cape Fear though.

That reminds me - I watched 'The King of comedy' last week as I've been downloading from The Guardian's '1000 films to see before you die' selection. Bobby, Bobby - wtf? The most annoying and unconvincing character in cinematic history!

I love Play It Again, Sam. I'm a huge Woody Allen fan and I actually think this is his straight up FUNNIEST movie, as in laugh out loud funny.

His physical comedy is really underrated. Make sure to watch the whole thing, or start it at 1:28 if you're impatient or pressed for time.

Yeah his physical comedy in Sleeper is pure genius too. Both him and Keaton actually are comic geniuses in the classical sense of the art from. Jokes, physicality, timing, expression etc....

In Sleeper where he goes into the van and becomes a domestic robot, well I nearly wet myself when his face was first revealed and then the funny shuffle he adopted! And when he was passing aroubnf the 'orb.' Also when he is initially re-animated, so primal in such a funny way...

Death to Smoochy [2002] - Ed Norton and Robin Williams star as rival children's television personalities in this noirish black comedy about the seedy underbelly of children's television. Some classic moments. Heil Smoochy!

The King of Kong - a doco about Donkey Kong and a couple of world record holders. If you can get past the subject matter, you will find a fascinating story that develops from the conflict between the longtime record holder and the new contender.

Black Death [2010] - set in England during the black plague, this dark, relentless film follows a young monk who travels with a fanatical christian knight and his entourage of soldiers and torturers as they travel to a remote village untouched by the plague to investigate rumours of witchcraft. Watch it if you don't like happy endings.

Cloverfield [2008] - I watched this without knowing anything about it, and was very impressed. Very good movie.

Cypher - futuristic, but most of the movie takes place in an office or hotel, focusing on the experiences of the protagonist. It could almost be made into a play. Twisty plotline. Not particularly special, except for Lucy Liu in an alluring role, which makes the whole thing worth a watch, if you are into that sort of thing!

Zatoichi [2003] - good story set in feudal japan about a blind masseur/legendary swordsman. Some cool stylistic motifs running throughout.

And, for a special mention, Simple Men [1992]. The best of Hal Hartley's films IMO, which I saw first unfortunatly - can't get into the others. It's slow, stylized and funny. You need to be in the right mood to watch it, but it's really cool. I'm actually using it for an adult class, since the stylized dialog is simple, back and forth, and interesting. Check it out.

Great youtube video: The Vader Sessions. If you missed it, it is a collections of scenes from the original Star Wars movies with Darth Vader's voice redubbed with lines from other James Earl Jones films. Awesome!

By Amelie Nothomb, a tight and funny take on the whole culture clash when a young Belgian woman goes to work for a year in a Japanese office and has to deal with the strange office politics, hierachy etc.

And she pulled it off I think mostly due to the young protagonist having emotional ties to Japan (spent her first 5 years there) that add resonance to the story and the pure crazy, quirky kafkauesque bearocracy meets Office Space kind of comedy she bought to it.

Very West meets East. Could be good pre-viewing for anyone coming to teach in Korea... You didn't grow up here = you're never going to get it unless you start being treated and acting like about 3 years old and then work your way up.

Best to just do what you're told and leave your Western ideas at home.

As most of us know, this is very hard to do!

Anyway silly hotwire had ever so slightly leaky eyes at the end of it, poor thing...
