Sorry if this has been asked before. I couldn't find the info on other threads. The letter from SMOE states
-All E2 visa holders who came into Korea before July 15th 2010 and have not submitted a Federal background check will need to get a criminal record check done by January 1st of 2011 if they plan on extending their stay in Korea or applying for a visa extension, this means all US citizens will need to get a Federal background check by the end of 2010 if you plan on staying in Korea or extending your visa
So, if I don't get that FBI check by January 1st, which is almost 9 months before I would be re-signing at my current job, then in August 2011 I will not be allowed to re-sign? What sense does that make? Am I reading this wrong? |

If you are going to be renewing, you will need to have the FBI check ready to hand over to Immi WHEN YOU GO TO IMMI TO RENEW.
In your case, that would be August 2011.
If you are renewing before January 1, you won't have to produce an FBI check YET.
I'm no expert, but that's how I'm reading it. |

I'm renewing my GEPIK contract next month (November) and I called immigration the other day and they told me that I will NOT need to provide a FBI background check. If I resign my contract again NEXT November (2011) then I will need to submit one then, so for this year I am all set.
I called two different times and talked to two different people, they both told me the same thing. |

The above two replies are correct. SMOE is sending out the wrong information to schools in Seoul (at least they are with the English notice they are sending out).
You don't need to submit a FBI check until your next visa application (new visa, visa transfer, visa extension, etc.) after Jan. 1, 2011.
Someone from SMOE either translated the Korean document incorrectly or is just plain misinformed. |

What if you are signing a new contract in November? Will you need the federal check done? |

Only if November comes after January. Let's see.
September, October, January, November, December.
Guess you do need it. Must be a leap month year. |

Ok, that is what I thought. Somebody asked the same question I did on the SMOE facebook page and they got a total non-answer back.
The weird thing is that the message SMOE sent seems to be taken from the English version on the immigration site. But they changed that one part for some reason.
Thanks for your answers. Saved me a lot of mailing stuff around and worrying. |
