|
|
I was recently walking in Ilsan and saw a random mini-bus parked on a back street. I think only the driver was in it. Anyways, the placard in the front window just said "Foreign Tourists on Board." (in English). I found it a little strange to have a sign like this. Wonder what the point was.
Hehe, I think it was behind those hotels near Costco, though this was mid-day. |

It could be like the signs westerners place in their car's back windows: i.e., "Baby on Board" (lol).
however, it could have a more sinister, xenophobic meaning: That is, I once went on a school MT with my co-teachers, and when we stopped to buy tickets at a ticket booth, the head co-teacher asked for: "4 adults and a foreigner." (What's all that about then?) |

Not sure what MT stands for, but often places give discounts to out of town/country people in order to attract more tourism. (Though it's the opposite in Thailand where they've too many tourists already, Farang..) Were you at a folk village or something? |

The good old days of Thailand having too many tourists are long gone. The Thai tourism industry is struggling to fill the gap of absent western tourists (Euro's, Nth Americans, UK's etc). Their new strategy, for better or worse, is offering discounts to people from India and the Middle East (not a lot of money in these 'carefully spending' people, though ). Thankfully, the Eastern Euros and Russians still come in droves (but only in their winter).
MT is Konglish for Membership Training, i.e., where everybody from your Korean workplace has to go and do bonding stuff and eating/drinking etc. The 'Four adults and a Foreigner' quote was just for a laugh - because they accented the 'Foreigner', as though I was a mentally retarded child (maybe you had to be there).
Good luck. |
