I'm working for a public high school in Gyeonggi-do. I just received a message that in my contract I need to pay for my housing security deposit, of W900.000. The thing is, I have my own home with my wife. Not through the school.

Do I have to still pay this?

Thank you for your reply!

lol

Yes I've had that happen to me a-many of times. However, things have changed for me, now as I recently got married and got that magical F-2-1 Visa..

So I am being cautious into being suckered into something unnecessary.

I mean if worse comes to worse, I will contact the recruiter who told me about the job. As she told me it wouldn't be a problem. But I prefer to handle it myself... Just want to make sure, if its the right thing.. Plus I am reading up on there are some legality issues involved with security deposits...

So if anyone has some specifics they can point me to, I will be very grateful~!^^

Congrats on the F-Visa. Are you raking in the dough yet?

You might be able to find something in your contract about it. I'm on a typical EPIK contract and it actually has a line in there that if the employee provides his / her own housing, they are exempt from paying a security deposit.

haha, thank you!

As of now, I am making much Much less than before... Sad But it's because I just moved to a new city with my wife, and its like starting all over again. No privates yet, and still getting "the lay of the land" to sort of speak. But its all good. I actually want to take it easy until I get settled in just right.

Same here. My contract says if I had my own housing, I'd still have to pay 900,000 deposit and you don't get it back until after you leave. I think it's actually a runner security deposit.

Only GEPIK has the housing deposit even if you have your own housing. AsiaESLbound is correct in stating that it's a runner security deposit.

I wouldn't even consider GEPIK because of it.

They can't keep you from getting it when you finish, anyway.

It stinks, but that is the contract Crying or Very sad

CEPIK in Chungnam province also has this in the contracts.

I've heard about some schools requesting a security deposit even from teachers with housing. Bobbybigfoot is soooo right. It might be veiled as a "deposit" but consider it as ransom money. Hopefully your school might be reasonable and waive this deposit.

If it's down as a housing security deposit, then I'd just ignore it. Contracts in Korea are always subject to reinterpretation; that's the culture there.

Just say that you have arranged your own house and so don't need to pay it. I wouldn't pay it myself and I wouldn't sign a contract with that in it either.

In which case you should reconsider taking the contract. Or remove it from the contract before you sign it. You are legally allowed to do that you know.

I always arranged my own housing. Paying money to the landlord for a bond I can understand. Paying it to an uninvolved third party is just too much.

I agree, but the problem is that they deduct 300,000 from the first three paycheques. So you can't just choose to not hand them the money.

I would hope not. That's just wrong. And weird.

I work, you pay. Not I work, you keep some.

Ooooh eeeee! What's up with that? What's up with that?
