My iPhone 3GS can receive text, and used to be able to send text with a WiFi connection, but now, it can't even send with WiFi. The "3G" logo next to "show" logo at top has disappeared, even with "3G" enabled in settings.

What's going on? Have a used up my service limits? (Makes sense since I can receive text, but why can't I send text with a WiFi connection then?) And this happened mid September and it is now 6 days into October.

Did you try taking it into A/S center? Sounds like it's the service prob not the hardware

My wife's 3GS has a similar 3G problem. If the 3G is switched off in order to preserve battery, the phone says 'No service.'
Is this normal? Is 3G required to make phone calls here?

try resetting the network settings

settings>general>reset>reset network settings

it just reboots the SIM and the phone and doesn't delete anything in the phone.

This is normal. Korea doesn't have a 2G GSM network so if you switch 3G off there will be no service. Unlike in the States where it will fall back to EDGE. So you must always use 3G.

Oh, hey, I'll do that, but it seemed not like a service problem but a hardware problem to me. And, I suppose the service people will recognize this common problem and suggest great solutions too. Not being snide, but I am acknowledging that I could have been more proactive.

Hey, that did the trick! I got "3G" showing on my network status bar at top. I can send and receive text messages as before. Thanks much!

No worries, figured I'd save you the trip to the A/S center for them just to do that. Any network issues that you have, always try that step out first.
