I would avoid several spots, almost all for the same reasons. Drunk morons. Places like Vang Vieng in Laos, google it. Trashy.

I agree, though people call us snobs for dismissing it.

Or GO to those places if you like to have fun. If you want to have a crappy trip, don't go to the places that everyone goes to to have fun. They're popular for a reason...

Some people are drunk morons, and there's nothing wrong with that. Isn't that what vacation is for...to have fun?

Depends on your interests, what age group you are etc. These days I don't want to be surrounded by arrogant little turds wearing bandanas, designer goatees, getting wasted , asking each other the same boring old questions, "where are you from?, how long have you been traveling?" whilst eating their banana smoothie or sitting in front of a TV watching an American drama with 50 other people dressed exatcly the same and thinking they are some kind of Marco Polo as they're spending only $20 a day. If I was 22, I would probably have been one of those kids, but people grow up and want different things in a vacation.

I was there at 22 (albeit just 2 years ago) and I was regretting even going there. If you like it, that's fine. But I would've had a better time somewhere else. I didn't put much thought into it; just went there. Anyways, the food sucks and at least 50% are drunk morons. For me, I go on vacation to experience new cultures, meet new people (especially ones from the country in which I'm traveling) try new food, see some architecture, and see things done differently. Happy pizza and happy shakes and banana pancakes are not what draw me in.

I was there at 22 two years ago as well, and came out with the same feeling. Eating godawful food while watching Friends drunk isn't my idea of a good time.

My favorite story from Vang Vieng: my buddy and I spent two nights there (the second night was a huge mistake) and we're waiting for the bus to take us to the promised land (Vientiane).

My buddy says something along the lines of "I can't wait to get the hell out of here."

The dude next to us is like, "Me too man, I hate this place."

I ask, "How long have you been here?"

Dude, "Two weeks."

Avoid the pit of despair is the best advice I can give.

I've met folks who have stayed there 2 weeks as well. And they will go tubing EVERY day (save one or two for a hike).

I talked to some other folks who did the same, and it almost seemed like they got into a cycle of drinking that they couldn't get out of, waking up too late to catch the 1 o'clock bus to Vientiane and then deciding to drink and skip catching a later bus.

The one thing I will give that town: they've got some seriously fast internet.
