There are a couple of Korean consulates in Italy. I am American, but I will be traveling in Italy in a few weeks, and I'm supposed to teach in Korea in mid-November.
I have all my documents. Everything will be ready by November 7th or so. I have everything I need, but suddenly I am being told I may run into difficulties obtaining my E-2 in a country that is not my own. The last E-2 I was granted was done in Thailand, and I didn't have any problems.
Anyone know??

Wait, I just realized everyone and their mother goes to Japan to get their E-2, so that's encouraging. Just looking to confirm that this won't be a problem. The lady in Milan didn't speak much English, but she didn't seem big on the idea... |

Yes, you can. Your prospective school will have to have your degree verified by the KCUE.
I would be in touch with the consulate you'll be applying for an E-2 and be sure they are aware this is ok. |

If it's your first E-2, you definitely can't. You have to get your first E-2 done in your home country. If you've got nine months or so on a previous E-2, then you can rock the Japan thing. As you're American, you can also go to Guam if it's your first, which costs about as much as a flight to Japan. |

I have had more than one E-2, though the last few jobs have been a visa transfer, and I haven't gotten an E-2 in... almost two years.
Man, it drives me crazy that you can never get a definite answer with this stuff. I mean if people go to Japan all the time, I don't see why I, as a veteran of three E-2 visas, can't get one at the Korean Consulate in E-2.
Keep the feedback coming- thanks. |

If you'd had an E-2 before then I think the only thing standing between you and an E-2 right now is the daily siesta taken by the Italian consulate staff. |

You guys are so nice to always reply to my questions. Thanks.
I think it looks good to apply in Italy. I've been thorough and am sure all my documents are in order, and I've already had three E-2 visas granted. I just get worried because as we know every Korean Consulate/immigration office seems pretty independent with their rules. |

As others have said, if you've gotten a previous E-2, you should be able to get it at any consulate. Personally, I don't have any experience with the Italian embassy or consulate, however I dealt with the Bangkok embassy last year and they could issue one if it wasn't a *first* E-2.
Of course the absolute best way to confirm *ANY* of this is to call the Italian consulate specifically and ask them this very question. And get names of who you spoke with. |

You have had a previous E2 so you can obtain a new E2 in any country that has a Korean Embassy/consulate.
The home country interview/visa application requirement is for NEW E2 applicants who have not previously held an E2.

I realize this isn't your first E2 but just to clarify for others, YOU CAN apply for your first E2 while not in your home country, I know, I did it. It also exempts you from the consular interview. |

OP,
Provide an update if you can as I may be applying for an E2 from Italy as well in the near future. |

Will do. Just wish I could get a straight answer from someone of authority- it affects my trip. Guess I have to give myself a few days in case Rome ends up having to be an alternative. |

I got mine in Rome- it wasn't my first E-2, but it was a few years back (so things may have changed). They actually processed it same day even. |

This is completely untrue. Had my first E-2 done in Egypt last year.
Just talk with the Embassy/Consulate in Italy, and have your original diploma to show them. I don't know what the hell the KCUE is, but was told similar nonsense last year, only to find out that no one really cared, and that no one really could do it. (I was applying with EPIK). |
