I asked my language exchange partner about it. I said, "Do that it's true that as much as 20% Korean woman really work as prostitutes?" She said, it sounded about right to her. She a working class educated girl, for what that's worth. I then asked her if she knew of any of her friends who had ever done it and she said, "Well no one would ever admit to it, but what happens is girls get wealthy 오빠-s and they have an 'arrangement'." She said that lots of college girls will do this, basically be "kept women" and every month or so they get a call and they get with this older guy and get maybe 1,000,000 or a nice hand bag.
So is that a "sex worker"? We have plenty of girls like that in the US, but I've never called them a sex worker. I just think of that as a girl who is finding a way to pay for school or whatever. Plenty of strippers do this kind of thing back home. |

Not that you're language partner isn't an expert in the field or anything, but there are lots of things that people hear as "true" that aren't really true.
As for whether or not they'd be included, yes, some people would include them and that would be one way to inflate the numbers to make it sound like the streets were absolutely crawling with prostitutes. |

You had this conversation with your co-teacher? Wow. When I worked at a public school, all my co-workers talked about was school; you've got a very open co-teacher. |

yeah, i've worked in two public schools, every co teacher i've had was pretty boring to talk to, but this one in particular worked for a lot of international companies and hagwons before working at this school so she was used to talking openly about things. |

With this girl, I'd put the odds around 60% that she's done that. I can think of some other friends, on the other hand, who put the odds at 98%... |

Ya absolutely, how is that any different then a girl who is trying to find a way to pay for bills like a car insurance or health insurance or rent. Those strippers would also be prostitutes. I guess what you would call those types of girls are part time prostitutes. |

Well why wouldn't they be? They are trading sex for money or some type of gift in exchange.
What is a prostitute to you? Someone who does this as their primary occupation? I mean what? I mean if your "self-employed" and you do it once a month or once every other month and you do it with "regular" customer exclusively or you do it with anyone who is willing to pay you are a prostitute. |

Korean male friends of mine get emails sent to them with proposals. You can look them up on websites, some guy at the gym was showing me the other day. There are such an endless line of establishments and means of soliciting prostitution that I think Korea should enter the Guiness book records (although some of their Asian neighbours would probably give them a run for their money). I have even heard that churches are used as a means of introducing people.
Thing is in this country prostitution is a bit like dog meat: every person says they don't do it yet everywhere you look there are services and establishments around.
The way people here are desensitized to it all is also rather quite frightening. |

What's funny to me is that despite the sheer number of prostitutes in Korea, every ajosshi is living in denial, thinking that his own daughter couldn't possibly be one of them. |
