Watch the Korean media have a field day with us.
Why was the adjossi following him and what was he saying to him? What happened before the video starting shooting? It looked like he (adjossi) was egging him on. It was wrong to punch him. The army guy should have given him ...the finger and walked away.
While most Koreans have been nice to me; I've definately come across a couple of rude adjossis that could have used a punch. But I didn't. I walked away.
I just hope the Korean media will investigate this fully, look at both sides of the story, and not label all foriegners living in Korea. The American media didn't label all Koreans living in America after the Virginia tech shooting in 2007. |

No matter what the Korean guy said to him or how he provoked him this is disgusting behaviour and the guy deserves to be locked up, I hope he is and that he is never allowed back on the streets of Korea again. Unfortunately, the Korean media are going to have a field day with this, and as always will ignore the good work foreigners do here, for example the charity events we have where I live and the work we do with the orphanages here etc.. But lets be honest, this is the media we are talking about and its the same all over the world.
But who should we blame? The Korean media for exploiting this opportunity to sell newspapers or this sorry excuse for a human being for giving them the opportunity? |

Saw it all over the news on the TVs at the gym today. Nothing of the K-on-K violence with the ajuma, but plenty on the mentally-disturbed waygook.
As discussed in another thread, the whitey was full of crap about 6 years in Iraq... maybe off his meds?
As for the old guy, apparently his name is JJ and he wanders around Itaewon mouthing off regularly... but that's just hearsay.
Perhaps we'll get some more "we'll throw acid on foreigners" threats via AES over this crap.
This city brings out the worst in people... no matter what color. |

come on guys, how many times are we going to post this video? I understand that you may not have realized this video has been posted 3 times, but...well, it has been. Im guilty of posting things that others have posted, too. But the guys a loser and needs to be deported (after a short stint in a Korean jail.) Simple as that. |

It's J.J. the tailor in Itaewon. He gets really mouthy when he drinks. He'd cheat you blind given the opportunity. Apparently he goes around egging foreigners on to try to get blood money. And has gotten money in this fashion before. Like 25 million won.
Both deserve harsh penalties. |

Irrational Koreans may by led into this way of thinking, but when confronted with such ignorance console yourself in that you are closer to objectivity - along with the rational Koreans I might add.

If sections of the Korean media use this story to generalize about the behaviour of a group of people on the basis of an individual's behaviour then they are indeed worthy of blame - that's just sloppy journalism. The waegook in the video is responsible for his assault - for which he should be punished appropriately, but he can not be held accountable for any sloppy journalism that ensues. Indeed, it is not as though he is profiting personally from the media coverage.

Although the guy in the video WAS arrested as soon as he got back to Yongsan, the possibility of ajossi getting blood money is nill. The Legal Assistance Office will see the video and claim that the old man was egging the soldier on and would not be grounds for getting any kind of compensation.
You guys are soft targets because it is now next to impossible to go on base and go after the soldier who did this and if a Korean were to attack a soldier, they would be arrested and jailed without the advantage of offering compensation to the soldier.
Yeah, I agree the guy was pushing it when he said "I was in Iraq for 6 years" (I think he meant the US was in Iraq for 6 years), but you have to remember that Korea is now an R&R assignment for soldiers who were assigned in a combat zone and about 90% of all combat soldiers who served in combat have PTSD. |

Well, if blood money was his goal, then he sure has a funny way of trying to get it:

Interestingly enough, all involved were brought in by the police for questioning, but the victim, a 58-year-old man named Mr. Je, asked for leniency for his assailant, a 31-year-old American who is reportedly NOT a US soldier.
Accordingly, the American was let off with a warning.
When the video went viral, the police asked Je again whether he wanted to press charges. Again, he said he wanted to forgive the guy. And so the matter ended. |

Yeah, I could see him doing that, too. He could cheat you blind/get what he can out of you or he could forgive you.
Depends. |

Maybe the Korean man forgave the foreigner for fear of retaliation later.
Korean immigration should just boot that foreigner out of Korea. The only way some of these guys know how to follow the law is to enforce it harshly. |

mc: Why would the legal assistance office get involved? The dude's not a soldier. And at 31, unless he's married to someone on the base, he's not a dependent. |
