I have been in Korea for a while now, however when I first came to Korea there were virtually no rules to getting a visa, and I managed to get my most recent position just before the new visa rules came into effect. Therefore I am unfamiliar with the new rules surrounding visa applications
I am trying to determine when I should send away for my Canadian CRC. I want to get a job that begins in March. I know that getting a CRC in Canada takes about 6 weeks to 2 months, however the RCMP advertise that it can take as long as 4 months depending on how many requests they have. I also know that Korean Immigration will only accept a CRC that is not more than 3 months old. Here is what I am fuzzy on.
When exactly does the "less than 3 month old" rule apply to? When you accept your contract? When you first send all of your documents to the Korean consulate in your home country? When you finally arrive in Korea, and apply for the ARC? Given the constraints of the R.C.M.P.'s ordering time, the amount of time it actually takes to get a job in Korea, and Korean Immigrations 3 month rule it seems that there is a narrow window of opportunity in which the CRC must be ordered. Too soon will invalidate it in Korea, and too late will prevent it from arriving on time.
So, fellow Canadians, what experiences have you had, and what recommendations can you make. |

The RCMP check (print based) takes up to 4 months from abroad so unless you are going back to Canada over the winter break you will need to be ordering them now.
They should be arriving (and dated) sometime in Jan or Feb if you order them now. For a March start you will need them in hand in Jan or Feb. in order to process your new visa application.

You don't need an RCMP check.
All local police checks use the national database and so they are valid.
I got my police check the day of in a suburb of Toronto (Peel). |

I got a local check done back in March 2009, but in August 2010 a staff member at the Korean Consulate in Toronto told me that a federal check was required - not that it makes any difference. These folks just can't make up their minds. |

I thought it was now 6 months. But whatever the case, the rule applies to the date the CRC certificate is issued. The date appears on the form. |
