I always found DAVAO more pleasant to stay in the dense downtown area. I felt more comfortable walking around as well.
Cebu, I always ended up near Ayala Mall...often times at Florentina Pensionne. End up walking to the mall and back quite a bit. Gets tedious after awhile. I never liked the downtown Cebu areas so much at all.
Both cities are quite comfortable though, really. Most of the creature comforts of Manila, but both are much more safer, more relaxing, and without the higher costs either. |

Malls get old real quick. If I liked malls so much, I would've stayed in the U.S., where there are malls aplenty.
As for Cebu, well, I need to visit Davao to see what is there before deciding which city is better. I've been warned about going too far south but I hear Davao is safe as long as you don't venture out of the city. |

Yeah, Davao is safe. Always had a strict mayor as well. Very strict on crime. It's a very comfortable city.
Actually I've always felt more stress and such in Luzon and Manila in particular. Down in Mindinao and especially in Davao...it is very comfortable. Just about opposite in feel.
People are so nice down in Mindinao...I've actually had street kids come up to beg money, and Filipino adults scold them for 'harrassing a foreigner' - lest they get a bad impression!
Whereas up in Manila...half of those street kids following you around, are highly encouraged by their parents themselves!
If you go to Davao, I recommend this hotel:

I had an excellent time in Puerto Princesa in March this year not because it was such an awesome place, but because of the people. I really got to recharge and relax there.
I just spent a weekend in Manila and have to say that while I had fun, I know any more time spent there would've been not so fun. Cebu seems to have the right balance of city comforts but mellow atmosphere, but then again, I haven't been to enough places in the Phils to make a judgement. |

I quite liked Puerto Princesa. Not because it's a great destination or anything. Just liked the proximity to the ocean, and it's an easy small city to walk around in with some decent restaurants.
Seems like the kind of place that isn't much now, but could be real interesting in 10-15 years from now, and it would ideal to own some property there or have a business there when that does happen. |

Perhaps Koreans think this already and are going there to invest. I did drink at one bar owned by an ajeossi and saw a few more talking to the natives about setting up shop there. |
