That is how it seems, yes. Keep in mind, though, as I posted earlier we were asked by our POE (maybe you're doing a hagwon, so it doesn't apply?) to get an FBI CBC, and our contracts are done in March.

I think you mistyped, but to avoid confusion, the date is Jan. 1 2011.

Yeah, I mistyped.

The thing is that only one recruiter is telling me this. The others are completely fine with just a state check.

After Jan 1st it's an immigration requirement to have the Fed level check. It sounds like recruiters say all kinds of things.

While many recruiters are snake oil salesmen, another has just told me something similar (only they said it was effective in November).

My hunch is that some of these recruiters are trying to make the transfer to the new policy early so that they don't have a ton of people withdrawing at the last minute at the same time for not having their FBI check. Having candidates getting blindsided by the new policy is not good for business and a white lie about the effective date could help the recruiters.

It's no coincidence that this recruiter has come out with it 3 months in advance of the change when it can take 3 months to get a FBI check done.

Going today to the local -gu police station to get the fingerprints done.

Is there anything that I should know before I go? Any problems you guys have had?

Or even better, can anyone recommended a police station in N. or central Seoul that does a great job with the process?

I posted a separate topic on this, but I've been informed by the coordinator at my Office of Education that they're going to scrap the changes to the E-2 Visa requirements this year and instead implement them in 2012.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but would be good to find out for sure.
Well, even if they do scrap these changes until 2012, I already ordered my FBI CBC, so I will just go ahead and turn it in when I resign, so I won't have to bother with it in 2012. I'd advise others to do the same...go ahead and order it...don't sit around right up until the end of your contract, only to hear they want it done this time around after all...^^

So what's the average wait time for the FBI check? Last I heard it was about 8 weeks? I'm currently on my 6th week of waiting...

You really don't have to wait another two weeks for the apostille by the state department. Also, sometimes they take up to 25 business days. You can do the apostille in any state or have an apostille agency do it - they do it within 1-2 business days. All the U.S. states are part of the Hague Convention so it's accepted.

Just FYI (for your information), other applicants are doing the FBI background checks and apostille quicker than you are while you wait by post/mail. You squander your time by not knowing how to do it quick, other applicants will take your jobs and you're left with a FBI background check apostille for no reason. The FBI background check and apostille only last for 6 months-1yr, in most cases.

So, yeah, I sent the first off here mid July, just got it back today. 10 weeks. Plus another two weeks, give or take for the apostillisation and then a couple days for it to get to Korea. Plan ahead.

I will be going Monday to get electronically fingerprinted for my state CBC. I really hope I get a job with EPIK. I seriously wish I had a record of how many hours (and dollars) I've spent on application related stuff.

Not really. My contract is up 28 Feb. I've got HEAPS and HEAPS of time, consdiering the rest of the people at my uni just sent off their FBI checks and I'm already on my apostillisation. So, unless the apostillisation takes 5 months, then I'm good to go.

FYI, state checks aren't valid after this year.

How many days was it after your credit card got charged that you got the CBC back? Mine just got charged the other day...

Hasn't been charged as of yet, at least according to my mom, who gets the statement.

3 weeks. Call your congressman and press the fact that time is of the essence. The FBI even paid for FedEx Priority shipping for me.

Remember that apostille can be done here in Korea via the US Embassy; no need to send it off again.

From the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.
http://www.asktheconsul.org/E2Feb09.htm

A Note on Apostilles: An apostille can be issued only by the designated authority in that state. The U.S. Embassy cannot issue an apostille on any document.

Either way, if you're in Korea, you DO NOT NEED AN APOSTILLE.

per www.hikorea.go.kr
(to find this info, scroll over "Information" then choose "Immigration Guide" then "View" under Work/For More than 91 days" then view the requirements for the E2).

※ In case applicant stay in Korea and is sent Criminal Background Check by mail, Or one's entry to Korea is imminent, the document notarized by one's embassy in Korea may be exceptionally acceptable.

This means a sworn affidavit on your CBC from the US Embassy is enough to meet their requirements. This costs $50, and you should book an appointment ahead of time. Other than the cost and travel, it's a painless process.

Today marks the 2 month mark for me and I'm still waiting. They charged my credit card on September 30th and I was told it would still be another 4 weeks from that date so I'm expecting it in the next few weeks.

I guess I'm really in no rush since I was told by my university that I won't be able to get an expected date of graduation letter until mid-November.

regarding fingerprints for those in seoul there is a very easy place to get prints done right in central seoul...

camp kim right next to the uso, you dont need to be signed on to base to get this done walk through the gate and go to the building dead in front of you (the uso is on the right) go to the door marked "permits and ids" tell the nice katusa person working there you need to be fingerprinted, they have the fbi cards, fill them out (get 2 done just in case one screws up) and they will do it. takes around 15 minutes.

you can get there from either namyeong station on line 1 (walk out the station turn right, turn right again at the main intersection and keep walking) or samgakji station lines 4 and 6 think its like exit 10 walk north you cant miss it
