English teachers behaving badly
In a parliamentary committee session last week, GNP lawmaker Lee Jung-hyun � the GNP�s only lawmaker from Jeolla-do, incidentally � noted that about 600 foreign English teachers have been booked for criminal offenses from 2007 to the present, citing material submitted by the national police.
By year, that would be 139 bookings in 2007, 163 in 2008, 188 and 2009 and 110 as of the end of August this year.
By criminal offense, 224 were booked for assault, 159 for immigration offenses and 91 for drug offenses.
Lee said credible verification procedures when hiring foreign English teachers were urgently needed to stop crime ahead of time.

| I'd bet the majority of assaults were on cab drivers who were trying to rip off foreign passengers. |

I'd like to point out that me and a friend got gang attacked by five Korean guys and had more injuries than them, in fact the ONLY injury to any of them was a (I exaggerate not) 1mm scratch next to the guy's cheekbone. I had a swollen eye and cuts and bruises all over my arms and torso from being attacked on the ground.
Me and my friend got charged for assault and the Koreans didn't.
That's after a gang out numbering us 3 to one attacked us and injured us.
Tell Lee Jung-hyun to go shove that up his batty hole.
I would be willing to bet my last gimbpap that the stats do not match the reality of the situations.
Another example being a friend of a friend got attacked in a club for dancing with a K girl completely unrelated to the attackers. He defended himself. Guess who got charged and a 5 mil fine?
Yup, the foriegn guy who got attacked.
I don't think even steelrails or madoka would try to claim the police here aren't prejudiced in favor of the locals

Part of this is a language issue. From what I can tell, they're far less likely to go all out in favor of the local if the foreigner has enough Korean to explain his/her side of the story. It's laziness, for sure, and certainly bad police work, but I'm not sure that it's malicious. |

| If it's a language issue, get the police department's translators onto the job. They realy do have translators. Don't just blow it off because it's easier to accept the word of the locals. How is that not malicious to run someone through the mill because of a language issue? |

I see it as more of a laziness issue. It's easier for them to accept the Korean speaker's word and ignore your complaints. It's callous, for sure, but I'm unsure if it's straight racism. |

I would love to see some stats per capita over arrests for English teachers compared to the general population. I wish there was a way to adjust for the prejudice/bias that results from being a foreigner, but I'm pretty sure thats not possible.
It's amazing how oblivious the general population is to the characterization of foreigners resulting from unjust police practices. Same thing with the AIDS test (required AIDS test makes people think foreigners have AIDS, which reinforces the idea of the test).
Then again, my country (US) is not exactly known for its fair and just police action towards African Americans. The high incarceration rate causes fear, which causes bias, which maintains the high incarceration rate.
It may only be anecdotal, but I know more foreigners here in Korea than Koreans, and the only one I know who's had police problems is Korean... |

The rule is not to wait around for the police if you get in any sort of altercation with a Korean. Apart from anything else, you'll be stuck in the police station all night and all day for hours and bloody hours even if the decision goes your way.
Judging from the stats, there are people out there that don't know this rule. |

I had to talk a group of college (high school?) students to not beat the crap out of a couple of western guys at yiedo (where they had the fireworks for hiseoul) for smoking. I went and told the guys they were being impolite and people were getting pissed and they thanked me and left.
I think alot of actions are miscommunication or misunderstanding.. |

Nope.
They would argue that it's worse for immigrants back home, donating endless paragraphs and links to support it, and then dedicate a single sentence to casually address that just maybe Korea does have issues with racism.
And yes, they are definitely prejudiced in favor of the locals... but so is almost everyone else in Korea.
That's why I love to assault them so. |
