I heard that there are new visa requirements. I want to renew my visa with the same school, however I am told that I may need an FBI background check now. My current visa expires on Dec 27th.

Will this be required when I renew since my visa expires in 2010? If so, how does one go about getting an FBI background check while living in Korea? How go I get my fingerprints taken? Do I go to the local police department in Korea and have them take them and then send them to the FBI?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yeah, and where have you been? People have been bitching and asking about it here for about the last 6 months.

I can't answer you specifically, but I know it can be done while still in Korea. Read through this thread for some info and links.

I do know it takes like 12 weeks to get the FBI check done so you better start crackin" if you need it by the end of the year.

I didnt know that it applied to those who are renewing at the same school. I know that those who work at a public school are exempt if this is their first time renewing. Thanks for the link I will check it out

I would double check that. I have not heard of any exemptions. Maybe a deferral for some more time if they are renewing before January, but not an exemption. I think they still need to get the ball rolling.

But I have been wrong once or twice in the past! Cool

I was reading it on the actual immigration website and they used EPIC as an example. Then I got a post from another person that said they head from the Education department or something that it is not going to be required until 2012 so who knows what the hell to believe. I need the owner of my school to call and figure it out.

Working under Epik it sounds like you wont need FBI check if you are renewing. You were here before new law. But now they say law is not going to be implemented. Just wait and see...maybe you can save some money and avoid the hassle. I am sure more info will follow shortly. I am in the same boat almost. I have until april though.
