Sad to say but I wouldn't be surprised if your husband's ethinicity didn't play a factor.

FWIW:

I've worked with JJ's and I've had a good experience and have an ongoing relationship with their office. When I first encountered them, one of their recruiters, who is no longer there, had pressured me to take a job, which at first I didn't want, but nonetheless, I think that they are exact in what they advertise. Last year, I visited their office in Gangnam and thought that they run a small yet tight-knit & responsible enterprise.

Just yesterday, I e-mailed a recruiter there with whom I am still acquainted. and she provided an immediate response regarding my visa situation, i.e. what to expect and where to go to verify information, etc.

Every company has it's glitches, and I'm not claiming that your offer didn't get botched, but I will say that if I was going to use a recruiter I would put JJ's in my group of four for working in Seoul.

Whether a person should use a recruiter, if they are already in Korea, is a different matter. However, no one will dispute the value of a career network. In return for the help which I've received from JJ's I want to put in a good word for them, but to each his/ or her / own.

i did say to the school that i don't mind sharing a single apartment, but they insist i won't be comfortable Confused

Did the school say that directly to you? Or did the recruiter? You know that recruiters aren't always upfront about everything, right? They may have recommended a couple of people for the position and then just told you and the other applicants that the school changed their mind, so that you'd think that the recruiter was doing his/her job and just the school was dishonest. Happens all the time.

It's also possible that the school simply found someone that they like better, or they didn't want be bothered with the potential admin problems of your husband being here, or whatever else, so they made up that "We think you won't be comfortable." BS excuse.

the recruiter said that it is against thier policy to take non teaching staff and the school said we would not be comfortable in a single apartment.

OP. It's really nice that you want to start a new life in South Korea with your husband. So please take these comments in the spirit that they are given.

You state your husband was educated in Pakistan. You did not mention if he was a Pakistani (dark skin) or a Western expat's child from Pakistan.

Are you aware of the potential rascim that your husband is going to experience here (if he has a darker skin)?

You should also know that any Korean school is going to be very uncomfortable having a 'teacher' who is married to a man with a dark skin. They may just fire you when you arrive (using some other excuse).

Sorry for the bad news.

Why would you ever sign onto a place where you had to live in a dorm? This isn't University anymore. I live in a nice apartment and I don't pay a won. Living in a dorm... LOL

The OP said that 'dorm' was the school's choice of words, it is a studio apartment.

I nearly didn't apply for the job I have now because my school advertised the housing as a 'dorm' as part of the employment conditions. However, the money, vacation and teaching hours were all very attractive so I thought I'd go along for an interview and perhaps suck it up and live in a dorm for a year. The 'dorm' is a nice, purpose built block of 14 seperate 2 room apartments with separate bedroom/sitting room/bathroom/kitchen/balcony and very pleasant shared outdoor spaces for bbqs etc.

I like it so much that I've been here 4 years and I am thinking about re-signing for a 5th. I have told the school it's better to refer to the accommodation as an apartment rather than a dorm because of the assumptions native speakers make about the word choice.

Well, when someone says "dorm"...I think dorm. And I think of University. It is what it is. By the way, Rangers 3, Rays 1 in the 6th.

OP ignore this nonsense. There are African Americans and South Africans working here with "dark skin" In my last hakwon job I worked with a African American girl and the director and students loved her. In my P.S. jobs I've met any number of minority teachers and with extremely few exceptions they enjoyed their jobs.

My friend's Catholic High School got a teacher from South Africa, and the teachers didn't know what he looked like before he arrived. They were all excited to have a black teacher, and when he showed up, he was white. They were disappointed, but they still like him.

I think it's great that they were so happy, though. It shows a change in attitude. It was hilarious, though.

I myself am asian, my parents are from Paksitan and i was born and bred in England. the school manager/director had seen a picture of me and was happy enough to offer me the job.

it's just my husband coming with me that cancelled it out Confused

I don't see why that should matter. They don't have to get him a visa.

they made the single accomodation an issue.

we're a married couple, not a pair of teenagers.

I had to reassure GEPIK of this as well, but they were understanding. they just told me that they didn't want any complaints about the single apartment later. i told them the size of the apartment would not be an issue.

and we have literally spent weeks living in something that was smaller than some of the single sized apartments that i've seen on you tube.

all that matters is that we are together. it sounds slushy, but i'm happy to be so slushed up. beats being in a relationship where you fight all the time.
