My apologies with posting this in the Korea job forum, but hardly anyone ever visits the United States forum.
I've been working at a for-profit adult vocational school in the United States for the past 5 months. The first two months I was working part time (20 contact teaching hours). They call it part time because we don't get paid for prep, so technically it is part time. 3 months ago, I started full time (40 contact hours, 4 days a week). The classes are from 8am till 1pm and 6pm till 11pm. It's been killer.
I leave the house at 6:30 am and don't get home till 11:30. With the long commute and need for at least a little prep, I'm stuck at work all day. The money is good, but I'm exhausted.
I requested to my boss that I switch back to part time employment at the end of the month when the new quarter starts. I explained that it's killing me, I enjoy teaching here, am grateful for the money, but I personally can't handle the hours.
She got pissed. She said that "It's good for young teachers to handle a heavy workload. It's normal to teach 40 hours in 4 days."
Anyways, she got really defensive and ended up saying that maybe I can't switch back.
I signed no contract, the hours are killing me - I'm the only one out of 12 other teachers who is working full time and they all think I'm crazy for doing it in the first place. If you were an employer, wouldn't you rather have rested happy teachers at your school or walking zombies? I don't understand why she's so upset. |
