I'll pass on a cautionary tale I heard while travelling by train: bring your own drinks and avoid the chai vendors on the train. The train makes stops for you to hop off and buy supplies at a station if needed. Supposedly a couple of female travelers drank chai laced with drugs. The curtains were closed and they wound up being raped and robbed while travelling on a sleeping car.

Maybe it happened, maybe it didn't. Regardless, chai on the train from the vendors is awesome, and I can't imagine train travel in India without it.

Unless you had been drugged and abused which does happen, then think you could manage without it no?

Again, maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't. When I go back to India I will drink delicious chai on the train while chatting to my fellow passengers. I certainly won't stop buying from the vendors because of a story I read on Dave's.

When/If you go to India, feel free to boycott them though. You'll have a great time with your attitude.

I traveled in India as a single female without serious trouble: I was groped at a Mumbai train station so I swiftly grabbed the offending fingers and bent them.
on a train from Delhi to Mumbai, I had some guys harassing me. I told some other passengers they spoke to the conductor and they moved me to another sleeper.

There are many horror stories about India. I was never drugged and drank the chai freely. Im am sorry for the girls who had a terrible experience in India but you cant go there and be fearful of everything. Most of the people you will meet are nice and they just want to talk to you and practice their English.

Have stock answers ready for the following questions:
What country?
First time in India?
Are you married?
What job do you do back home and do you make a lot of money?
What do you think of India?
Do you like India?
Let me buy you some chai.
My friend is married to a lady from UK/ USA/ Germany/ Australia . Do you know her? Have you been to this place?

This has all been excellent information and I never heard of an ashram before, so I'll be accommodating in one or two of those on this journey. I'm pretty well-traveled, but I think India will toughen me up in a whole new sense. Also, trains and chai seem perfect.

D.D. mentioned something along the lines of difficulty getting an Indian visa. This is a concern of mine because I have definitely heard other horror stories.

Does anyone know of a travel agent in Korean that handles Indian visas?

Has anyone done the Indian visa in Korea through the embassy/consulate in Seoul?

Thanks.

I got an visa for India online 3 years ago; I needed a Korean to help me from memory as it required a courier service. Perhaps a decent English speaking travel agent can save you the headache.

My thoughts are that India now thinks of itself as a major player in the world, and don't want riff-raff type travelers staying for 6 months doing the baba thing. Perhaps they want a different class of traveler that stays a short time and spends as much money in a short time as the people on a 6 month spiritual quest.

Wait a minute, how difficult is it to get a visa for India?

I always got the impression it was a 'show up at the airport' kind of country.

You should be sweet getting a visa, just allow for processing time; I got my passport back the day before I was to fly!

They've been tinkering around with the visas, they seem to be outsourcing the process to various companies.

There is a year long trial on having a VOA for 5 countries, but it's for punters on trips of less than 30 days; if you're a Kiwi, you're in luck.

As kurtz said, it is a matter of processing time. I had to wait a week to get my visa in Bangkok. At the consulate in San Francisco, it (used to be) a 24 hour process.

What travel agents did you guys use to go to India? My ex-girlfriend is going there for six weeks and she's trying to find a cheap roundtrip ticket to korea to visit me while she's there. Any recommendations?
