Folks, this was JUST brought to my attention. This event is happening in my neck of the woods. Might be a chance to scoop up some cash and meet some new people.
Can you dance, sing, or play an instrument? Would you like to compete for $300 (USD) or just show off? Residents and business owners in Songdo New City have assembled a full day festival of activities including a talent contest. This is your chance to shine in an international community. The multinational local band Songdo Social Club will get things started at 17:00. Show up early to catch them!
Where: Haedoji Park in Songdo New City, Incheon. Take the Incheon line to Campus Town. Upon exit from exit 3, turn left at the road and follow to the intersection. Cross the intersection to the park. Event is in the park. If you get lost, ask for the park name or the park with the large hill. Its the ONLY one!
When: October 16, 2010
Festival time: 10:00 21:00
Talent contest time: 17:00 20:00 (contestants should arrive by 16:00)
Who can participate: Anyone is open to participate and show off their talent. Singers, dancers, bands, and acrobats are all welcome. However, contestants talents must be tasteful for family audiences. A full PA sound system and drums will be available for bands. Performers are limited to about 3 minutes each or one song. If you are singing along with a song you MUST provide the music source such as an iPod or MP3 player.
Prize: $300 for the overall winner
Deadline for registration: October 15, 2010 @ 20:00 HURRY!!!
Eats and drinks: The main sponsor Sungwon M&P has generously given to subsidize the food costs. Full plates of Korean food will be available for 2,500 KRW. Ala carte for 1,000 KRW each item. Non-alcohol beverages will be available. Beer and other drinks are BYOB. Please drink responsibly and cart out your trash.
How to apply: Contact Mr. Yoon at 010-9380-4636 (he speaks English but you need to speak clearly) or e-mail [email protected] with Talent Contest Application as the topic.
When applying, please provide the following information:
Name:
Nationality:
Contact number:
Name of your act:
Your talent:

Friends and fans,
We deeply regret to issue this note. We have been informed by the promoter and sponsor of the Songdo International City Festival and Talent Contest, Mr. Yoon Jae-Ho, that the multinational musical act Songdo Social Club has been removed from the event. It was Mr. Yoon who solicited our multicultural band via a local buisness owner. Furthermore applications from foreign talent competitors are no longer being accepted. This event was clearly promoted as being open for foreign participants (see attached document). Reasons sited for exclusion of the band were "lack of space on the stage for a band and lack of time". We have since learned that Songdo Social Club has been replaced by a fully Korean band. Keep in mind that the festival is to span from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM nullifying all justifications. In addition, we understand from our direct conversation with Mr. Yoon last night that all communications were in Hangul until just the last few days and no efforts were made to reach out to any non-natives.
On a personal level, I have spent the last 14 hours working furiously to promote this event free of charge. My band mates and I offered the services of The Songdo Social Club to help further promote a positive image of this burgeoning multicultural city. This note is not meant to directly slander or malign anyone. Sadly, one can easily conclude that the intent of this "International" event is not to demonstrate how international Songdo New City is. What the promoter has accomplished is to earn Korea another xenophobic black eye.

Thanks TT4. After a session of reading my latest Dirt Rag magazine and a few beers I stopped sulking. I think the phrase "if you can't join 'em, beat them" is appropriate. Working on a TRUE international fair and talent contest right now.
Hope to see you soon. |
