Were there any hagwons? Probably in Gangnam, yeah? |
There were probably hagwon around, but I know that Gangnam was a barren field up until 15 years ago. |
1995? You have no idea what you are talking about. |
More like '85. |

Korea in the 80's wasn't wealthy, Korea was still very much a 3rd world country until the early 90's. Korea in the 80's looked kind of like what Thailand or Malaysia looks like now. |
3rd World? I know that right after the Korean War it was, but by the 1980's, they'd been going through 20 years of steady economic growth. It must have been at least 2nd World. I bet that there wasn't any Family Mart though, it was probably just a bunch of those old convenience stores that smell like crap, yeah?
Korean music is okay even today.... At least the girl groups are good, the guy groups suck. |

China has had over 20 years of high economic growth, yet it's still a 3rd world country. I believe Korea was in the bottom 10 in GDP in the early 1960's.
Anyways, yes I would put Korea in the 3rd world category for most of the 80's. And they certainly were not rich at that point, but I guess they weren't poor either. It was still under a military dictatorship until 1987, and the first non-military president was elected in the early-90's. The average income was around $5000 at best. The US and Canadian GDP/captia was 3x higher. The GDP/capita didn't hit the $10,000 mark until sometime in the early 90's. Car ownership for the masses was just starting in the mid-80's.

One thing for sure it that South Korea has done a remarkable job to pull it's country out of poverty in the last 50 years. But I've always wondered, if Korea ended up unified after the Korean war, would it look more like the North or the South? |
