Currently I'm converting AVI files for my ipod Nano with Quicktime, but it takes a good 22 minutes for a 700MB file. Is there a faster way to do this? |

Yes. Buy an MP3 player that plays .avi natively. |

On my new machine, I Can convert a 700 mb file in about 5 minutes using Xilisoft's Video converter 6 (see btjunkie.org if you uh..want an extended trial)
it also supports a feature where it can use the GPU to speed up converting. |

Or you could wait a few days for the new VLC iPhone App to be approved by Apple for the iTunes store (the iPad version of the App was approved last month, so there should be nothing to hinder the release of the iPhone version). It will allow you to play AVI files without converting first.

how is that going to help his Nano? Does VLC run on the Nano?
I don't think so
not to mention

# Its still not possible to use the hardware video decoder, so unfortunately in most cases 720p video still wont play smoothly.
# Unfortunately, we couldnt support older iPhones and iPods. Youll need either an iPhone 3GS or an iPhone 4 (or a same-generation iPod). The reason is actually pretty simple : based on our tests, the older iPhones (3G and Edge) dont have enough power to properly decode most movies. |
are a couple big minuses. |

Oops. Missed the part about the Nano.
Otherwise, I don't see the issue with this software. I'm eagerly waiting to get it for my iPhone. Most shows and movies are available in much less than 720p quality (the 350mb shows and 700mb movies are usually around 320p) so hardware acceleration is not such an issue.
Also, most people in Korea have the 3GS or the iPhone 4, so that shouldn't be an issue for most people either.
But yeah, if you've got a Nano, you're pretty much limited to transcoding it yourself. Maybe time for an upgrade to the new iTouch? |

Actually no. The iPod touch was very popular in Korea before the iPhone came which means there are a lot of pre-4th gen iPod touches in the country, and around the world.
it's not a bad app, but after encoding, the videos are much smaller, so there is a space issue as well. |

Fair enough. Though, if you are using outdated technology, I guess you have to deal with certain difficulties.
If someone wants more ease of use, I suppose it will mean upgrading to more recent technology. |

a year old is hardly reasonably called outdated. Heck if you'd bought your iPod touch 3 months ago, it wouldn't run on it. |

I guess it is up to each individual. I replace all three of my computers and phone each year, so I can always use the most recent stuff, or, can do it soon enough.
I guess I still can't believe people buy the iPod Touch since the iPhone is available. Seems a little silly to carry around a phone and an iPod when you can just carry one device. |

Some people don't upgrade their phone right away. Lot's of people still on contract for who knows how long. |
