Hi all,

I'm trying to make a reservation for a week long stay at a resort in the Philippines. I've stayed in the Philippines before, and just e-mailed to make my reservation with no problem. This resort is different. They want me to give them half the money before my stay. I already think this is a little crazy. Why not just take my credit card number like the rest of the world? But okay, rules are different everywhere, so I spoke further to the American owner about it. She wants me to wire the money with western union! Does this seem crazy to anyone else? Their fees are insane-a last resort for sending money to someone in desparate need. If I sent it through my bank, the cost would be only about $1.50.

What do you think? Would you do it? Is this normal practice? Does this seem a little sketchy?

Not knowing the place in question, and considering that it is not the average procedure, you are better off not doing it.

You could consider offering a smaller amount, like the amount that would cover the first day.

No resort (in the Philippines) is so busy that you need to prepay 1/2 a week in advance for a reservation.

No reputable resort would ask you to send by Western Union.

I wouldn't do it.

Western Union? Sounds like a shady place to me.

I would never never never do a western union.

In an extremely rare case I might do a paypal.

Post the link to the hotel/resort. I will tell you if it is legit.

I have been there many times and have friends down there.

I wouldn't do it. If you dont show up, how will you get the money back?

The fine print of many places say that unless you pay the deposit, your reservation is not guaranteed. Unless they are sold out that day, they'll keep your reservation open hoping you'll show up. If it's sold out, then tough shoot for you.

Alright thanks guys.

I know the resort is legit- Coral Cay on Siquiljor- because after doing several hours of research and reading reviews, I picked up a lonely planet and saw it in there. Lol. Either way, the whole Western Union thing still sounded sketchy to me. I don't understand why I should wire money just to make a reservation. I think I'm just gonna avoid that whole strange situation..

Why not try this? Go the resort and say you didn't feel comfortable sending the money via Western Union but ask if they have a room at the rate quoted. Never hurts to ask, eh?

Yeah for sure. Of course I thought of that, too. I'm just unsure if I want to just show up and hope for the best. Usually I travel with friends or alone, but this is a family trip. Anyway, off to check out a couple more places
