i'm applying for a f4 visa and i'm confused about exactly what docs i need. i'm assuming the following info is correct since it's off the embassy of the republic of korea in the usa website:

http://www.dynamic-korea.com/consulate_service/visa.php

1. A Korean-born alien

- Substantiating documents for an applicants ex-Korean nationality such as Korean family tree register and certified removal from family register etc.
- Substantiating documents for the reason and the time of obtaining a foreign nationality
- Other documents which are deemed to be necessary by the Ministry of Justice

2. An immediate family member of a Korean-born alien
- Substantiating documents that prove his or her parent's ex-Korean nationality
- Substantiating documents for the reason and the time of obtaining a foreign nationality of the applicant's his or her parents
- Substantiating documents which establish the familial relationship such as a certificate of birth
- Other documents which are deemed to be necessary by the Ministry of Justice

I'm going with #2 since I was born in the states and my mother's a U.S. citizen.
I've been reading everywhere that you need a familiy registry to apply for the f4 visa but if I'm going with #2 then I don't need it right?
I just need to provide the listed documents.

Some additional questions...
The list doesn't mention if originals are needed or if copies are ok.
Does an old expired korean passport prove my mother's ex-korean nationality?
And does my mother's certificate of naturalization meet the reason and time of foreign nationality requirement?
Mail in application or go directly to embassy?

help is much appreciated.

Hey,

You still need to submit the family registry. You will probably also need to submit a copy of your mother's naturalization papers. Do you know if your mother already renounced her Korean citizenship? If not, she needs to do that for you to be eligible for the F4 visa, since it doesn't happen automatically when you gain citizenship in another country.

I think copies are okay for the family registry, but I don't remember if copies are acceptable for the other documents. I would suggest that you contact your local Korean consulate. Get information from them and if possible, apply directly to the embassy.

well my mother passed away in 2004 so even if she didn't renounce her citizenship, she's technically not a citizen of Korea anymore right? is my logic twisted?

how can i find out if she renounced her citizenship?
and does anyone know how i can find out if i'm on the family register?
