im not trying to defend them, but i think the previous poster was onto something when he said its the difference between being a lady and a female.
My girlfriend is always very quiet when she eats (except noodles). She told me this was because her grandmother was high brow and would smack her around the head when she ate noisily at the table.
This is great becasue it means I dont have too and she has very good noise manners.
So Koreans do learn this in certain households.
Unfortunatley though, I think its a bit of a class thing like spitting and and stealing childrens bicycles.
