Hi everyone,

This is the first time I've ever posted anything so my apologies if I'm not doing it properly or if this question has already been asked.

I'm applying for the EPIK March 2011 intake and I want to confirm exactly what is needed for the Criminal Records Check for Canadians. I was looking up information on the RCMP website (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cr-cj/fing-empr2-eng.htm) and a request can be made for a Criminal Record Check or a Vulnerable Sector Verification. Can someone confirm which of these is required?

Also, could a local/municipal CRC or VSS do as I have heard that records in Canada are all maintained in a national database?
Since it may take up to 120 days for the RCMP check to come through, will a local/municipal clearance be accepted in the meantime?

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could provide some clarification.

Thanks in advance.

They don't give the VSS for work overseas. So just get the regular CRC.

Secondly, submit the fingerprints electronically to the RCMP. You can do this at a private agency and the background check will be finished in 72 hours, and in the mail.

As for the local or provincial check, due to the regulation changes no one knows if Korea will still accept them past Dec 31st, 2010.

You have to get the Vulnerable Sector Search because you will be working with children (it tells you on the form). A regular CRC only takes 30 mins and you can get it right away from any police station. A Vulnerable Sector Search will take 3-6 weeks to complete. It is a national search and it does not require fingerprints unless somthing comes up. I submitted my form on Sept 24th and still have not recieved it in the mail.

I just got my visa last week and the vulnerable sector check wasn't needed. Just the regular, CRC you get at your local police station (I got mine in Brampton, ON) I wasted a lot of money on that Vulnerable sector check as it is quite expensive (I think $80?)..

I wouldn't get the vulnerable sector check if I were you.

You paid $80 for a Vulnerable Sector Search? I got mine done in Brampton also (the one on Hurontario St./ Across the Court House) and only had to pay $45; the same price for a regular criminal check.

Vulnerable Sector Search is required if you are going to be teaching and around children. I was told that I needed a VSS by my recruiter. I have also done quite a bit of research and they all say that EPIK wants a VVS (because it is a more extensive search).

oh yea, sorry, thinking of the combined price.

And yea, I'm with EPIK and they didn't need the vulnerable sector check at all...just got my VISA back from the consulate last week...

VSS is NOT needed.

CRC of the CPIC (national) database is.

Whether or not a municipal police check of the database be accepted after Jan 1 is anyone's guess.

The clerks at immigration do know that the RCMP is the "national" police force (and they somehow equate it with the FBI even though it is NOT the same) so they may (again, anybody's guess) accept or reject a check done by any other police service (like Edmonton, Winnipeg or Vancouver).

Yesterday, I submitted a Canadian police check to Immigration (Daegu) that was accepted for a hagwan contract renewal (visa now valid until September 2011).

The police check certificate was obtained over the counter and at no cost from a local RCMP detachment office (no fingerprints required) although an appointment was necessary as the office only processed such requests twice a week.

I then took the certificate directly to the Korean Consulate in Toronto and paid less than $10 to have it notarised/stamped by them (there is no apostille in Canada).

The RCMP website says up to four months. I just got my fingerprints done at the local police station. Should I get them redone at a private agency??

According to the RCMP website, it's 2-3 weeks for the background check (only 120 days if anything comes up.) http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cr-cj/time-temp-eng.htm Has anyone done this from Korea? How long did it take to get here?

For those who've had fingerprints done in Korea, did you just walk into the police station and ask? Did they know what to do?

Also, since Canada doesn't do apostilles, how do we get the CRC verified in Korea?

It may say 2-3 weeks but I would be cautious and give yourself the full 4 months. I got mine done a while back when I was living in the states. It still took them nearly 4 months to send it back to me (and it wasn't because they used snail mail).
I would recommend sending your check to a friend or family member. Then write a letter allowing it to be released to a third party(your friend or family). That way they can send it to you faster via FedEx or whatever. RCMP just sends you your check via regular mail:S That's what I am doing right now.
I heard we can get it verified at the Canadian consulate here in Korea by signing an affidavit or something similar.
I walked in with a Korean friend to get my fingerprints done. I think they knew what they were doing (you need the rolled and flat impressions of your prints). I had to translate the form though as it was all in Korean.

I did my fingerprinting a few weeks ago at a police agency in Daejeon. I had a Korean friend call them ahead of time so they were expecting me and had an English fingerprint form ready for me to use. It was very easy and free.
