I've learned over my years that the less said the better but something happened to day that I have to question: My school had a trivia quiz today that was handled elimination style. There was a hard question that eliminated all but one.

Story over I thought but the principle interjected and said that we could give the others a second try.

I played my part continuing on with the quiz. When it was realized the one student who got the difficult question right fluked into it and they couldn't answer any of the other questions.

After the quiz was finished I was told that our school was sending one student to a regional contest. My school doesn't want to send the student who "won" but someone else who is smarter.

So, most likely my school will override the contest results and send another student.

Now I let a lot of stuff slide but this doesn't sit well with me; if this happened with me when I was young my Mom would have been at the school screaming various curses in an ever increasing volume.

To be honest I already know the answer to my question: this shouldn't be something that I get too involved with and from a job security point of view it's not a fight worth picking. Still ain't right though.

The school is going to do what they want to do.

This situation has arised with me also recently. My county sends students to canada during the break. one of the students that is going I protested because of the way he acts during class. But since his grades are higher than other students he is going even though he has a bad attitude.

What can you do about this situation, well let your opinions known and move on. It is not worth stressing out about. I know how you feel but it is a losing battle that you cannot win.

Just tell him that if it was your choice you would choose the kid that won. Because that was agreement that we had going into the competition. If the principal chooses someone else so be it. He is the boss, you are a teacher. It's not fair, but neither is life. Lesson learned. Poor kid.

Stay out of it. The only person that would care about your opinion, in this case, is the kid who won, but isnt going to the contest. You are a non-entity and your opinions matter correspondingly. Pretend you were never there, witnessed nothing, and go have a beer. It's Friday, after-all...

tell the kid that "won" the second time he doesn't deserve the trip and should cancel. the first winner should go. what a sham. I hate rigged contests.

I'd take the first winner out for pizza with 2 of his friends. There's nothing you can do, work-wise, but it'd really cheer up the kid.

...so the school has decided to use some other metric to decide which student deserves to be sent on to the next round of an academic contest, because the first round was apparently won by luck...and you have a problem with that?

Is this a gameshow, bingo, a lottery, or an actual academic competition?

Not only is this fight not worth picking, but you are on the wrong side of it as well....

The only person to blame is the person who came up with the brilliant idea that the school contest winner would go on the represent the school... if they just wanted to send the kid with the highest grades, they should have just done that in the first place.

But then, it wouldn't be keeping in line with the ancient Korean tradition of making 'smart' students feel like they will always get a pass, 'average' students feel average, 'dumb' students feel absolutely worthless... and who could forget, making sure that all teachers, especially foreign ones, look like total idiots.

the kid doesn't know he won yet, so his feeling will not be hurt by the results, so no need to take him out for pizza.

No privates. I just don't have any debt, and still make money back in the states. I think I'm set on pearls for the next decade!

Do you really think that taking 3 kids out for pizza is expensive? Confused

The mom will fight if she feels her kid was sleighted. No need for you to fight.
