Hey, my coteacher and I are bouncing ideas and I thought I'd throw the question to you guys too. What are you planning for Halloween? I work in an afterschool program in a public school. 10-14 kids per class. Any ideas to share? I'm thinking puzzle, movie, snacks, but that's what we do for every holiday. Open to new ideas.

Haven't got it all figured out yet, but masking making and decorating the classroom.

I downloaded "Thriller" from YouTube and we're going to watch that. That was one of the things I always looked forward to for Halloween. I've printed out the lyrics and then removed certain words that they should know, so they will have to listen carefully. I've given them a word bank to choose from just in case. We'll also talk about where it comes from and learn some of the words for the different common costumes (e.g. mummy, vampire, ghost, etc)

Nothing unfortunately, I'm working from the text book with little chance to diverge. If you can get the materials, something like mask and decoration making, from following instructions in English or something could be good.

for my regular middle school classes i'm doing a quick review of halloween traditions (basically, just the whole pumpkin carving, candy, trick or treating thing) and some vocabulary, and then we're doing some games about halloween. for my afterschool classes, we might do something special, i'm not sure yet.

I took pictures of teachers, and put them on this website. It creates a funny video, and the kids loved it.

Then, I gave a little mini-lecture about some basic rules of halloween. Stuff like make sure your parents check your candy, and watch out for razors in your apples.

Then we did some vocab like, werewolf, vampire and the like. I even pulled out my favorite pun for halloween, "Mummy and Deady," which the kids loved.

Then we played bingo using the vocab.

All in all, the kids seemed to love it. But I teach at a public school, and I was going from class to class so I didn't do any decoration or anything like that.

I've already decorated our classroom bulletin board with a Halloween theme.

I've got actual stations set aside for an after-school Halloween party. We'll do the apple-bobbing, mystery boxes which the S's put there hand into - cherry tomatoes as eyeballs, different rubber toys, etc. maybe simple party game like musical chairs and some sort of balloon race, when the game is finished there is some slip of paper in a balloon with a prize. Doesn't have to be too expensive.

I mentioned Halloween during this past week, but no one knew anything about it and my co-teacher asked me in class what Halloween is since students didn't know anything about it. I explained that kids dress up in costumes like Batman, Dracula, Cinderella, etc. and go trick or treating for candy. I probably will show videos on it since there is a special interest in American practices with the Koreans thinking in order to learn English, it's necessary to learn about Americans.

I've done heaps of things in the past.

I've done pumpkin carving before-- the students brought in pumpkins and we carved them-- I had back-to-back periods with those kids, though. It was awesome because it had zero to do with English, I didn't even have to do anything, and the kids were happy... I don't know what the other teachers thought of it, though.

I've also done absolutely nothing before... just played some unrelated game, and they liked it. All they really care about is getting candy and not doing work-work.

The movie choices sound great to me, but don't you think kids will think they are kinda old?

Are there any more recent movies they might like more, or do you really think it doesn't matter?

I'd like to do something, but I'm kind of on a tight schedule and have to cover some lessons in the book this week. I was, however, thinking of opening the class with one of those scary maze things w/ a volunteer students. That should be good for a laff.

Do the mystery bowls of creepy stuff. Peeled grapes for eyes, cold wet noodles etc and cover the bowls with a napkin. Have their kids stick their hands inside and feel. Describe the different items as body parts from a witch or whatever. Peeled grapes are eyes etc.
