I came home from an overnight biz trip this week to find my apartment busted in to. They'd maybe used a tire iron to pry back a strong metal flange on my door & jimmied the lock. Expecting the worst, I stepped inside.

Computer & tv, intact. Cats, okay. The intruders had evidently gone through every drawer & cupboard as contents were strewn on the floor. I called the cops.

Sokcho police, awesome! First guy on the phone spoke no english but a competent speaker phoned me back 5 minutes later. In 10 minutes there were 4 policemen here (including the chief). Then the CSI crew showed up (no kidding!) who proceeded to check every door knob for prints & took countless photos & actually lifted a shoeprint from my floor.

I went to the police station & filed a statement, everyone courteous & apologetic that this had happened.

Heres the curious part. Nothing was missing! (Except for a few packets of ginseng drink & they didnt even take all of them). They didnt take $600 US cash from a drawer they ransacked. They took a gold earring from a box but I found it later on the floor of another room.

I'm only out the cost of a new lock, & the locksmith commented that the entry job was professional, not kids.

So what do you figure went on? I'm mystified.

This is a horrible thing to happen to you. Thankfully you were lucky enough with your belongings and no one was hurt.

The only thing I can think of is that maybe it was someone you knew or at least knew you. They broke in while you were on a business trip and they took the time to go through all of your stuff. They probably had no fear of being caught since it sounds like they were in there awhile. They knew you were gone.

And maybe they were looking for something specific. They didn't take a lot of obviously valuable things, but still put forth a lot of effort. Is there something of value you took with you or you had in the past that someone would want? You know, a lot of crazy people are hiding gold bars in their mattresses these days :p If not, then it's a crazy case indeed.

Is it that mystifying?

Let me guess. Six 100 dollar bills? I bet if it was 60 man won bills it'd be gone. They simply might have been ignorant of the currency.

Maybe they were just curious about the waygook and acted on the peek-inside-shopping-bag impulse Koreans have.

Or they could have anti-foreigner sentiments, taking a joy ride through your place.

They weren't there to take anything. They were there to train your cats to attack you when they hear the trigger word.

Or maybe there was something valuable that you were unaware of, hidden in the walls or something and the guys who knew about it only recently got out of the joint.

Maybe they're still in there. Hiding. Waiting. Ready to spring on you when you close your eyes for sleep.

Maybe teenagers, some of my ex clients used to do that sort of stuff for kicks when they were bored.

Saying that, its damn strange the $600 in cash is still there...

Any Government agency would have woken you up and happily trashed the place while you looked on, so I don't think it's anything to do with Immigration

Maybe Redaxe is right..

Anyway, I'm just guessing, you were lucky for sure

This. Can you remember who you told that you were going on this business trip, schwa?

This is seriously a weird one. Even if it was kids they would know to take money and the computer. Or they might have been worried to take the loot home because their moms would have busted their asses.

But on the other hand how would a kid know how to jimmy open a lock? Maybe somebody opened a lock smithing Hakwon and they had a test that day!

When the police chief asked me if there were any witnesses I said "Yes, the cats!" But they werent talking. Good for a laugh.

Apparently theres cctv all around my neighborhood -- the cops were going to have a look at that.

No psycho ex-girlfriend, no public extravagances, no enemies I know of.

There were a pair of ajummas that morning cleaning up the apartment below mine after my deadbeat neighbors (many unpaid bills) moved out. They'd have known there was no one else in my small building.

Anyway, no big harm, nothing to hide, & no concerns about a repeat performance. But word out: break-ins happen.

I'm enjoying the speculation. Should I call the cops about the severed head I just discovered in my freezer? I'm worried it might affect my next contract renewal. What would ttompatz do?
