I want to send my luggage home (a few suitcases around 50 lbs. full of clothing and shoes), while I tour SE Asia after my contract is up. What are the cheapest options? I have heard about the slow boat, but can't seem to find it anywhere. Time is not a priority. If it arrives in three months, that will be fine. Any advice?

I sent a large suitcase back to Canada by surface mail. It cost me about 50,000 Won.

It has to be under 20 kg and within certain dimensions. Mine was one of those big ones with the handle and the wheels. At first, they told me I had to put it in a box, but I found out later that I didn't need to.

It took about a month to get to Canada, just like any other surface mail.

Size dimensions and weight differ by country too, so if you are not from Canada you'll have to check the specs. I know the size restriction (not weight) is significantly smaller for Australia.

You can find it at the post office. Sending by surface is the slow boat. There are different size boxes and if your post office is big enough, there might be someone who will custom pack whatever you're shipping.

Did the exact same thing as you back in April. Just go to the post office and buy boxes, fill with clothes, bring back to post office. I sent one smaller box and three #5 boxes and paid about w100,000 total. They arrived in Canada in about 6 weeks.

It'll be a bit more if you want to keep your actual suitcases, but like Big Mac said, even full they shouldn't cost you more than about 50,000 each.

Hard to give an accurate answer without knowing where home is.
(there is no slow boat (surface mail) option to the US anymore).

The price will depend on what region you are in.

Typically it is 48k won for 20 kilos and a maximum size of 200 linear centimeters (2 meters) as calculated by:
(height*2) + (width *2) + length.

You can send larger or heavier items by air parcel or EMS but you will pay dearly for it.

The cheapest way (unless your suitcases are of the smaller type) is to sell/ditch the case and just mail your stuff home in some #5 boxes (bought from the post office).

I'm leaving Korea soon too, to do some traveling, and I'm wondering which post office would be the best to do this from, where someone will speak at least some English. I've been to the post office in Noksapyeong to pick up packages before and they didn't speak a word of English (and I even had to talk to the postman over the phone!) My Korean isn't good enough to explain that I want to send suitcases back to America, so which post office in Seoul would be the best to do this?

Is 20 kg the maximum weight for surface mail using the Korean Post Office?

Yes, 20k per box is the maximum for surface packaging.

There are higher limited for air freight and EMS or other special services.

This isn't true. I shipped stuff to the East Coast of the US by surface mail 2 weeks ago.

Just go into the post office and say 'shipping' they will point at some red boxes; you have to use their boxes. Take the amount of boxes you need, and the forms to put on them, go home, pack it then come back and say 'shipping'. They'll send it surface mail. a 20 or 25KG box is about 66,000won if I remember correctly. It takes pretty much bang on two months to arrive.

**make sure you put a note inside the boxes on the top of all your stuff saying it's personal stuff, also emphasize this on the form**
