Well I have been completely blindsided. After beginning the application process way back in August and going through an amazing recruiter (Teach English Abroad in Korea), my application was sent off to EPIK last week, and up until this morning I waited day after day to be offered an interview. Then the news came this morning that EPIK declined to offer me an interview.
My application was up to their standards. Wrote a terrific essay, had perfect letters of recommendations from my previous hagwon and my latest employer here in Canada. I have a English degree and a teaching degree, and as mentioned, 1 year teaching experience at a hagwon in Korea. And I wasn't even offered an interview! Also, before any mentions the importance of looks or age, I am 28 years old, and maybe not a perfect 10 but definitely attractive enough to be teaching in Korea!
If I had been granted an interview and then not accepted, I would not be left with this bitter taste in my mouth towards Korea. But to not even make it through to the interview stage without being given any explanation, well I can only come to one conclusion, and that is what a few others have mentioned on here before - they seem to be limiting the amount of qualified/experienced teachers they're willing to hire this year.
. |
just so you all know, epik does reference checks. if you don't receive a good reference check, you won't receive an interview. i'm managing the foreigners at a hakwon, and epik called me last year for a reference check for another employee. i gave a poor reference, and the guy didn't receive an interview. ... ... of course, he didn't know that i was the reason. needless to say, we didn't renew his contract either. |
Oh yes, I'm well aware they do reference checks. I provided a perfect letter of reference from both my previous hagwon (am on great terms with them) and my current employer here in Canada, who would for sure give me a great reference.
My picture was fine, my references were fine, my application was up to their standards, and i'm qualified. So whether they turned me down because I have a few tattoos (that i made clear are always covered) or because I was asking too much, either way I'm not really pining away for EPIK anymore.
But very happy for everyone who got in |

I got an email from Footprints a few days ago that said
"Matthew,
I have excellent news for you! You have been selected for an interview by EPIK. An official from EPIK will be calling you for an interview on Sunday October 24, 2010 at 10.20PM, in the PDT time zone.
EPIK will be calling you at the primary number you listed on your application [412-849-3637]. Please ensure that you can make this time work for you.
Please confirm that this time and number are OK- simply reply to this e-mail .*"
And I forgot to reply to the email, like a dummy. Does anyone know if I'll still be having the interview today? The time and date work fine for me. |

Hi everyone,
Firstly, congratulations on all those who have successfully passed their interviews!
I applied directly for EPIK on the 11th but did not provide my references, I re-applied on the 15th and provided all the documents they asked for.
As far as I can tell, my application was completed correctly and I had two perfectly fine letters of recommendation.
I've not heard back from EPIK since my amended submission on the 15th. I'm getting a bit worried as my friend submitted their application on the 18th and received a confirmation of submission email on the 21st whilst I have received nothing.
Should I email them again to make sure they've received my application, assume they've received it and wait for a response, or am I totally screwed?? |

Hello all,
long time lurker first time poster here! Thanks to everyone that up'd this thread with their interview questions, I have mine at 7am this Tuesday - so I'm preparing as thoroughly as possible.
My question is - do you get the opportunity to ask the interviewer questions at the end of the interview? Is there anything beyond the obvious that you guys recommend I should ask? |

Having passed my interview and submitted the required documents--sans an FBI check, which is still in process--I'm a bit concerned waiting...
At what point do the job offers become available?
The offers I've received have been through outside agencies, rather than EPIK thus far.

I submitted my documents to my agency 'Footprints' and they haven't got back to me yet to say if they have passed my documents on to EPIK yet! They arrived at their Korean office last Monday morning Korean time. Is anyone else going through an agency?? |

I sent my docs to Korvia's Seoul office and my tracking says they were received by their office on Friday morning. I did not get any email or anything, but I just emailed my recruiter asking her for confirmation of receipt and asking how long it typically takes to receive a contract offer. I'll let you know if I hear anything. |

I'm hoping that I haven't stirred the pot and created additional--and unnecessary--anxiety!
Thanks for those who have responded!
Maybe I'm being too impatient. From what my recruiter has informed me, patience is key. |

Nah, I was worried anyway I'm worried as the ladies at the DHL office couldn't fit my agencies name on the address label, so I have been waiting for them to tell me anything |

My recruiter said that they had received my documents, but would need proof that FBI check is processing. I replied and asked for my documents to be checked again because I made a copy of my background check before I sent it to D.C. to be apostilled. She wrote back and said they wanted a receipt or something. I guess it's frustrating because they said you can send your docs if you have an apostilled state CRC and now they are saying they won't send my docs to EPIK unless I have proof that my FBI CRC is processing, but a copy of the actually FBI CRC doesn't count?
I hope that this will be cleared up soon. She said she'll talk to the Seoul office and get back to me. |

Well, I'm less panicky: I got an interview Wednesday evening. Huzzah?
That said: Is it possible to apostille the FBI CBC through some local unit and not through the State Department? |
